Daryl Pov

It didn't take a genius to figure out that Jody hated her new brother. She was very reluctant to go and see him, but merle clearly couldn't wait. I was also a little excited, if I'm being honest

From what Jody had said, he sounded like a posh twat, probably not the kinda guy who'll have it easy round here.

"Come on, can't be that bad," I mumbled, brushing her hair. She was sat on the floor infront of the sofa, her eyes on the TV.

"He bought my daddy home. Doesn't get much worse than that."

"She has a point," merle said, chuckling. He was finished off a can of beer, despite it being 10am.

Since he was out of prison, and trying to make a good impression on his new found son, Freddie Adams had gone to work that morning. He didn't have a job. Hadn't had a job for a long time. So we could only assume that he was actually at the bar

"Come on. Let's go. I wanna meet my new brother in law," I said, pulling Jody up to her feet.

She rolled her eyes, taking my hand and letting me drag her out of my trailer and towards her own, merle not far behind

"Morning Mrs Adams," I called out as we entered the trailer. I wasn't a massive fan of Donna Adams. She was nice enough, loved jody and me. But she had Jody young, and kept pestering us about starting a family and getting married. Even if I did marry Jody, neither of us can afford to move out right now. And we sure as hell ain't living together in our family trailers

"Morning Daryl. My, oh my. You are getting tall. And there's my beautiful girl. That Will Dixon see you last night?" She asked, kissing jodys cheeks.

"He was too drunk to notice."

"Why doesn't that surprise me? Merle! Honey, you look so handsome!" She squealed, hugging merle tightly

"And you are looking hotter every day, Donna."

"Oh stop it," she blushed

Merle continued to flirt with Jodys mama. "Come on. With that ass and those tits, you don't look a day over 21."

The age gap between merle and Donna was only 5 years, but that didn't make it feel any less weird when they flirted with eachother. They went into the kitchen whilst me and jody sat on the sofa in the living room, some guy infront of us smiling awkwardly

He coughed, as if to get our attention. When jody looked at him, he asked, "I may have got the wrong end of the stick, but are your parents married?"

She looked at me and we both sniggered. I answered for her. "Donna and Freddie are married. Have been for 15 years. But just because they're married, doesn't mean they love eachother. Divorce ain't cheap."

"Yeah. It'd cost an arm and a leg to separate. They're much happier having affairs and then arguing about it later," jody smiled at him as he gulped and nodded sheepishly

He stood up, rather formal, and stuck his hand out. "I'm maxwell. It's nice to meet you. You must be Jodys friend."

"He's my husband," she lied, holding up her hand. I noticed how she'd moved one of her rings onto her ring finger

"Husband? I see. That's lovely. That makes you my brother in law. Splendid." I had never met anyone like maxwell before. It was clear he was a little sheltered. But he seemed like a nice enough guy

"I'm daryl. My brother, merle, is in the kitchen with Jodys mama."

Donna and merle walked in, whispering to one another flirtatiously before handing out breakfast. They both sat down and the first thing merle decided to say was, "so, what the fuck are you here for?"

"Merle!" Donna gasped, although their was a smile behind her shock

"I just wanna know the man has good intentions, sweetheart."

Maxwell looked over at me and jody, as if he was expecting us to help him. But we were just as curious. Why would someone with a life as amazing as his, throw it away for a father as shitty as Freddie? "Erm, well I'm here to know my father, sister and step mother. I'd like to know more about my family and why my mother hid it all these years."

"Trust me, she did it for your own good," jody said

"I don't understand."

Donna agreed. "You shouldn't be here, sugar. You have a life out there, something worth protecting. This corner of America is reserved for those who have no other choice. I didn't ask to live in a trailer park. Don't get me wrong, I love my life. But there is so much more out there that you're just throwing away if you stay here for Freddie."

"He's my father. He deserves to know his son."

Jody was getting frustrated. She stood up angrily. "You are the 13th person I've heard say that! And how many kids do you see here? Huh? 13 people have come looking to have a relationship with Freddie Adams, and not a single one of them has stayed! And guess what, you are the only son he's ever cared for. Do you know why? It's because you have money, money that he desperately wants so he can spend it on whores, alcohol and drugs, because that's the kind of man he is. The sooner you realise that, the better!"

With that, she stormed out of the trailer. I chased after her, into the woods behind. Tears ran down her cheeks ferociously, a sight I didn't see often. She kept running until eventually she stopped, and kicked a tree

"You never usually care when another one of Freddie kids comes knocking."

"They aren't usually as gullible as max."

"What's going on?" I asked, gently moving her closer towards me, holding her in my arms

"It isn't his fault. Part of me is jealous of the life he has had, and another part of me is angry that he can just throw it all away. He could go places and do things that we can't even dream of. And max is gonna throw it all away for Freddie fucking Adams. He has no idea the pain he has caused me, mama, you. He has ruined our lives over and over again and I'm just so angry that max can come here and be ignorant to it all. He doesn't have to know how it feels to be beaten and touched by the same man who is supposed to protect and love me."

I kissed her forehead, then buried my face in her neck, deepening the hug. "It ain't your fault. None of this is fair, but Freddie isn't to blame either. He'll see what kind of man he is sooner or later."

"I know. I'm trying not to be angry at him. But he just used his privilege to bring back the same man who once punched me so hard that I broke my arm. Its crazy to me how the world even works in that way. Why does a man who has lived such a wonderful life be able to take away the justice i finally felt was being served?"

"He shouldn't have done that. It was stupid of him. Everyone is in jail for a reason, right? Even if he didn't know that reason. You gotta speak to him. Maybe this could be the sibling you finally get to keep."

She looked me in the eyes and shook her head. "No. I don't want a sibling. I have my family and there sure as hell ain't room for him."
