The early light of dawn cast a warm glow over the small village, and Isolde stirred from sleep with a sense of unfamiliar calm. The fear that had knotted her stomach was still there, a quiet reminder of their journey, but here, in this tiny room with Lucien resting peacefully beside her, it felt like a weight she could carry.

She rose quietly, careful not to wake him. His breathing was deep and steady, a welcome change from the restless nights he'd endured since they fled England. He had healed slowly, his color returning and his strength beginning to show. Yet, despite their peace, Isolde felt an urgency gnawing at her, a sense that they couldn't remain hidden here forever.

Isolde made her way downstairs to the small common room of the inn, the scent of freshly baked bread and woodsmoke filling the air. The innkeeper, a kindly older woman with graying hair and a warm smile, nodded at her as she stepped in.

"Good morning, dear," the woman greeted her, setting down a steaming mug of tea. "I didn't expect to see you up so early. Thought you and your husband might sleep in, given the journey you've had."

Isolde smiled, her heart catching slightly at the mention of "husband." It wasn't the first time she'd heard them referred to this way, and each time, it sent a thrill through her—an affirmation of the life they were trying to build.

"Yes, it was quite a journey," Isolde replied, feeling the warmth of the tea in her hands. "I wanted to get an early start."

The innkeeper nodded, a knowing glint in her eye. "There's nothing like an early morning for making plans," she said. "Sometimes, life only gives us these brief windows of quiet, and we must take them when they come."

Isolde nodded, feeling the weight of the woman's words sink in. She knew this morning's peace was fleeting, a precious moment in the midst of so much uncertainty. She sipped her tea, allowing herself to savor it, letting the warmth flow through her as she watched the light of dawn creep across the room.

As the village slowly woke around them, Lucien descended the stairs, his gaze softening when he saw her waiting. He moved with more ease, though there was still a hint of caution in his steps, a carefulness born of lingering pain. When he reached her side, Isolde looked up, her eyes searching his face for any trace of discomfort.

"You're looking well this morning," she murmured, unable to hide the relief in her voice.

Lucien managed a smile, taking her hand as he settled beside her. "It's because of you," he said softly, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. "If it weren't for your strength, I doubt I'd have made it this far."

They sat in companionable silence, their hands entwined as they shared the simple breakfast the innkeeper brought to them. But even as they lingered over the warm bread and fresh fruit, Isolde could sense the tension growing, the unspoken question hovering between them: Where would they go next?

Once breakfast was finished, Lucien led her outside, where the first stirrings of life filled the cobbled street. They walked quietly, letting the brisk morning air clear their minds. The village was bustling now, the voices of villagers calling greetings to each other as they set about their morning tasks.

As they neared the edge of the village, Lucien turned to her, his expression serious. "Isolde, we can't stay here much longer. Edwin... he won't give up. He'll send more men, and it's only a matter of time before they reach us."

She nodded, her heart heavy. "I know," she replied, her voice quiet but steady. "But where can we go? Every place feels like it's just another risk, another point of exposure. If we can't stay here, then... then where?"

Lucien took a deep breath, glancing back toward the village before answering. "We head south, toward the mountains. They're vast, difficult to traverse. If we can find a secluded area, somewhere high and hidden, we may be able to start a life there. A quiet life."
