The safety zones buzzed with tension as Mira Thompson and her crew secured themselves against the uncertainty swirling around Nova Terra. The alarms blared intermittently, drowning out the whispers of fear that flitted through the air like specters. With oxygen levels dwindling, every breath felt like a countdown.
Mira glanced around the cramped space, her mind racing. The suspect list had grown, and everyone was on edge, their eyes darting nervously as they awaited the next announcement. She could feel the weight of responsibility pressing down on her—she had to uncover the truth before panic set in.
“Stay vigilant,” she whispered to Reyes, who was stationed beside her. “We can’t let our guard down. The saboteur could be anyone.”
Reyes nodded, his expression serious. “I’ve been thinking. What if the oxygen siphoning is a distraction? They could be planning something else while we’re all focused on that.”
Mira’s stomach turned at the thought. “You might be right. We need to keep an eye on everybody, especially those who’ve been acting suspiciously.”
As the crew members settled into uneasy silence, Mira felt a stirring of unease. “I’m going to check the hallways,” she said quietly. “I need to see if there’s any unusual activity.”
“Be careful,” Reyes replied, his voice low. “I’ll keep an eye on things here.”
Mira pushed off from the safety zone, floating down the narrow corridor. The lights flickered ominously, casting shadows that danced along the walls. The air felt charged, and she could almost hear the whispers of the station itself, as if it were warning her of the danger lurking in the dark.
As she moved deeper into the station, Mira strained to listen for any signs of trouble. The soft hum of the machinery accompanied her, but there was something else—a faint sound, like hurried footsteps echoing in the distance.
Mira paused, her heart racing. She floated silently toward the source of the noise, pressing herself against the wall. The corridor was dim, and she could barely make out a figure moving furtively ahead.
“Who’s there?” she called out, her voice steady despite the fear gripping her.
The figure froze, then turned. It was Jace, the engineer, his eyes wide with panic. “Mira! I didn’t think anyone would be down here.”
“What are you doing?” Mira asked, narrowing her eyes. “You shouldn’t be out of the safety zone.”
“I—I was just checking the systems,” Jace stammered, his voice shaky. “I thought I might be able to help stabilize the oxygen levels.”
Mira studied him, noting the sweat beading on his forehead. “We all need to stick together right now. There’s too much at stake.”
“I know,” Jace replied, his voice dropping to a whisper. “But I overheard something. I think I might know who’s behind the siphoning.”
Mira’s heart raced. “What did you hear?”
“I was in the hydroponics bay earlier, and I saw Tara talking to someone,” Jace said, glancing nervously down the corridor. “I couldn’t see who it was, but they were discussing the oxygen levels—how to create a distraction.”
“Did you hear what they were planning?” Mira pressed, her instincts flaring.
“Just bits and pieces,” Jace replied. “Something about needing to ‘eliminate the competition’ and how the chaos would cover their tracks. I didn’t stay long enough to hear more.”
Mira’s mind raced. “We need to confront Tara. If she’s involved, we can’t let her out of our sight.”
Just then, a loud crash echoed from the other end of the corridor, causing both of them to jump. Mira’s instincts kicked in, and she motioned for Jace to follow her as they floated cautiously toward the sound.
