Calliope Griffin wasn't supposed to exist, in fact anyone with an older sibling wasn't supposed to exist either, at least not in space. On the Ark only one child is to be born but her mother was pregnant with two. Her father was supposed to float the second child but he couldn't do it, he was a good person and couldn't float his second born child that he grew to love even before she was born. So, when the doctor told Jake to go float his own child, he couldn't do it. Instead he went to one of his friends that he knew couldn't have children and begged her to spare the child's life.

She did and in return if she was able to have kids at some point, that child wasn't hers anymore. She would turn the child in and she would be floated when she was eighteen. She promised not to tell them that the child was the Griffin's second born but if Calliope did get floated, she wouldn't cry at all because she never wanted that child.

Her father visited the girl everyday on his breaks and would always bring her something of her sisters to remind her that she in fact did have a sister. Calliope was always terrified of the woman who raised her as whenever she did something wrong, she would punish her for it. She hated Aurora so much that she decided she'd turn herself in. She decided the skybox would be better than being beat everyday.

Before she could do it, though, her father stopped her and guided her back to the room, but before she could walk in, her so-called 'mother' stopped them saying that she could have children and she's pregnant. Either way she was going to get turned in. Her father bent down and hugged her for probably the last time and her and Aurora walked off to the skybox to get turned in.

Aurora wasn't in trouble for keeping the child a secret because she was dating the acting chancellor. Calliope didn't get floated but at this point she sure wishes she did. Calliope cries in her cell everynight and draws what she thinks her sister would look like at her age. She's been there since she was twelve and at fifteen, she's gotten pretty good at drawing.

At almost eighteen years old her door opens and two guards walk in one with a bracelet and another with a stun baton. "What are you doing?" She asks, backing up against the wall. One of the guards holds her by her arms while the other snaps the bracelet on. "Let me go!" She screams. "I want to see my dad!"

"You don't have dad, little girl."

She was about to say his name when she realized he could get floated for it. "Please." She begs. "Just tell me what you're doing."

The guard drags her out of her cell and down the steps to a line of kids. "Wait, please!" She yells to the guards retreating. "I want to see my dad! I haven't seen him in six years! Please!" One guard stalls. "Please, sir. I haven't seen him since I got locked up." A boy gets shoved into her and she almost falls until the boy catches her. She stands back up. "Please. I just want to see him." The guard clears his throat and continues walking. "No, wait. Please!" She screams one final time, but the guard doesn't stop.

She feels a tear starting to slip out, but she just wipes it away. "Are you okay?" the boy behind her asks.

She nods. "Fine." She turns back around as she sees the line starting to move.

"I'm Nate."

"Cal."

"Calliope Cooper? The one they locked up for being a second born?"

She nods. "That's me. But I'm not a Cooper. Just Cal."

The boy nods as they walk into the room. "Where are we going?" She hears a boy ask.

"To the ground." Another replies. "At least that's what I heard."

Calliope stops and tries to bolt out of the door which she now realizes is a drop ship door. "You can't! Please! We know nothing about surviving on the ground!"
