"Sure, sure I'll call you when I get there." I told my extremely protective Mom as I made my way through the other side of the campus to the library, chosing to study creative writing I spend a lot of time there working on some essays or just Reading.
"Alright, don't do drugs, Gracie" My Mom said before laughing awkwardly, she thought I was going to do drugs and have sex everyday while being in college and sadly -about the sex part only- i spend my days and nights studying and eating, i had barely spoken to my best friend Noah.
I chuckled and hung up as I walk in the library and made my way to the back, I liked it back there because most people worked near the coffee shop inside. I set my stuff on the long wood table and dropped my backpack besides the chair.
I plugged in my phone and put on my headphones randomly chosing a song and started reading The Outsiders, I had read it first when I was thirteen and ended up being my favorite book, once in a while I will reread parts of it or even all of it sometimes.
It was about an hour later when I finally noticed that for the first time there was someone sitting across from me. It was a guy, in his early twenty's, his hair was a little too long and a little too curly, he was really skinny and a bit pale.
I got up and started to put some books back into my backpack, suddenly feeling really awkward when he spoke up.
"I really like that book." He said with a hevay british accent, I had to replay the sentence on my head to figure out what he said at first.
I smiled slightly, "It's my favorite book." I replied awkwardly.
"This one's my favorite book." He said grinning and passed me the book he was reading, it was In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, I didn't know much about him other than the fact he was the author of Breakfast at Tiffany's, which I hadn't read but hey,I watched the movie.
I looked at the cover before hand it back at him, he just stared at me as if waiting for me to say something but I didn't know how to reply to that and though of different things I could say but they all ended up with me sounding crazy.
"Uh, it looks interesting, what's it about?" I said and sat back down on my chair, he seemed please that I had stayed and went on about how the book is about the true story of the murder of the Clutter family, and how Capote had read about it and started doing research about it before the killers were caught then he just rambled on and on about how Capote concluded that the motives of the murder were his anger to the world and his ambiguous sexuality.
During the whole thing I just nodded, don't get me wrong it was really interesting and it was even more interesting because he was telling me with such passion that he made the little details seem extraordinary but I just didn't really know how to answer to that without sounding dumb.
He smiled at me when he was done talking, I opened my mouth to say something but was cut off by my phone ringing.
"I gotta answer." I said and answered Noah's call.
"Gracie! You won't believe what happened, so I was at this bar with Nia, you remember Nia right? Anyways, and some really hot guys bought us some drinks and they invited us to a party next Saturday, do you think you can make it?"
And that's my best friend, Noah Winslow, she talks more than anyone I had ever met and it was really nice most of the times, but when I talked with he ron the phone it frustrated me.
"Well, hello to you too." I said and she laughed softly.
"Sorry, I'm just really excited."
"It's fine, and I don't think I can go, I'm really busy and I have to work." I groaned at the thought of going to work, I was the most bored cashier ever.
"Oh, alright, I was really hoping you could go..." She trailed off and I Heard someone talking to her in the back, she giggled.
"Well, I gotta go. Make time to hang out with me, Gracie." She said and hunged up.
I look at the boy still sitting there, he had gone back to reading his book, I sighed and he looked up from his book.
"Everything alright?" He asked frowning and I nodded.
"Yeah, just my best friend wants me to hang out with her but I don't really have time." I shrugged and he nodded.
"I'm Matty, by the way."
"Gracie, nice to meet you." I replied, following what my Mom had toldme to say whenever someone introduced themselves, which made me a little bit better at talking with strangers.
"Lovely to meet you too." He smiled and went back to his book.
I smiled sofly and stood up, taking my things.
I stopped by the coffee shop and bought a chai tea, and a black coffee for Noah, I decided I really had to spend time with her.
When I was outside I sat on the library stairs and texted her to pick me up, she answered inmediately with a smiley face and a all caps "HELL YEAH". I smiled and took a sip at my tea while I waited for her.
It was getting a bit colder each second but I just sat there hoping it will rain until I got in the car. A few minutes went by when I heard someone walk out.
It was Matty, I looked up at him and he grinned.
"Aren't you cold out here?"
"A little, but it won't take long, just waiting for my friend to pick me up." I told him
"Mind if I wait with you? I'm also waiting for someome to pick me up." He explained as he sat down besides me putting a couple of books between us, I offered him the coffee I had bought for Noah, it was going to be frozen by the time I gave it to her.
He took it and hold it in his hands for while before taking a sip.
"So, what do you study, Matty?" I asked looking down at my dirty Doc Martens.
"Music, I have a band." He said proudly.
"What about you?" He asked and took a sip of the cofee before setting it down besides him.
"Creative writing." It wasn't interesting like his, I mean it was but it wasn't going to amaze anyone like Music and having a band did.
We stayed like that, sitting in silence while I occasionally sipped my tea to keep me warm, after a while Noah finally appeared.
"Gracie, wait!" He called out when I was walking to the parking lot, he jogged to were I was and handed me In Cold Blood.
"You should read it." He smiled and ran his hand through his curly hair.
"Oh, sure, thanks." I smiled back and put it in my backpack as he walked back to sitting on the stairs.
"Matty! But when do I give it back?" I said walking back to return the book, he was a stranger and I was taking books from him, that might seem normal to you but for me books are precious and I wouldn't lend mine to Noah, lets not say a stranger.
"Don't worry, I'll see you around." He grinned and I mumbled a thanks again before walking to Noah's car and getting in.
"Gracie, I just drank one beer but tell me am I so drunk I just saw some pretty boy flirting with you?" She asked and wiggled her eyebrows.
"Am I so Noah to be able to flirt with a guy?" I grinned and she shrugged and started the engine.
"Well you might not be flirting with him but he sure did." She pointed out and I laughed.
"Oh sure, lending me a book is the newest effective pickup line." I said and she nodded.
"For you, it is."
