Chapter Seven
Amber
I open my door and flop down on my bed. So much has happened tonight. Both of my siblings are getting married within a week and I'm all alone. I'm so worried about everything. I'm worried for Desmond, I'm worried about the sake of Enchancia, I'm worried about what will happen in the next few years, and I'm worried for myself.
Clio isn't in an arranged marriage either. I'm glad because we aren't being forced into anything, but I'm also scared that I'll end up alone. I would have loved to marry Desmond. I always kind of thought we would end up together. I won't play dumb, it's obvious he's had a crush on me forever. We even dated for a little bit, but decided to end it because of school and responsibilities. I just wish things hadn't gotten so out of hand.
I suppose things could have been worse. At least Desmond is alive. At least he's ok. I'm not sure exactly what his family is. Father refuses to tell me the details. Which is odd because he usually tells me everything.
For instance, I knew all of this before tonight. I knew about the approaching war. I knew my siblings were to be married off for the sake of the kingdoms. I knew all of it.
I sit alone with my thoughts for a little longer before Sofia comes in.
"Hi, Sofia," I say, not taking my eyes off the spot to the ceiling I'm staring at.
"Hey, Amber. What's up?"
"Nothing. Just thinking. How is Vivian? She looked pretty shaken up."
"She's fine, just a little overwhelmed."
"I would have thought she would be excited to marry James. Doesn't she like him?" It's clear Vivian has been obsessed with James for years. Everyone knows it, except for James I assume because he's never made any move to begin courting her, but tonight was different. I could tell James really saw her.
"How did you know?"
"She's always staring at him and blushing when he's around. I think James might like her too, especially after the reaction he had to her tonight."
"What reaction?"
"Well he was practically studying her when she walked into the ballroom, and he was quiet the whole dinner like he was thinking hard about something."
"Oh. I guess I didn't realize."
"That's because you were totally obsessing over Hugo."
"I was not!" I laugh. She so was.
"Sofia I'm not blind. He was hyper-focused on you, too."
"Yeah right. He thinks of me as a sister." She says like the words are sour in her mouth. How could she be so oblivious? How could they both be?
"No one looks at their sister like Hugo looks at you."
"Whatever you say, Amber. Could you help me with my wedding dress tomorrow?"
"Of course! I'll meet you in Madam Collette's room at nine." I tell her.
"Great! Night Amber!"
"Goodnight Sofia."
