I thought I would cry at the funeral but to my surprise, I didn't. I was all out of tears by the time Uncle Severus and I apparated to the venue. I was just numb.
I didn't notice the dozens of people who came up to me to give their condolences or give me a hug and tell me everything will be alright. I didn't feel anything when I took a handful of black roses and dropped them over my mother's and sister's caskets.
I felt empty as I headed to Malfoy Manor for the reception. I sat at a table as people talked about their memories of my mother and sister, simply staring at a relatively blank wall with just a portrait of Draco's family.
We used to have family portraits. I thought to myself as I saw Narcissa hug her son in the moving picture. I felt my hand reach up towards the portrait.
"Draco, why don't you take Y/n to your room." I heard Narcissa say to her son behind me. I then felt a tapping on my shoulder as I saw Draco behind me.
"Y/n, come on. Let's get out of here." Draco said and I nodded gratefully. We headed up the stairs to his room where I had been numerous times. I immediately went to the window seat like always and sat down, hugging my knees to my chest.
"I'm so sorry about your mum and your sister." Draco said after we had sat in silence for a few moments. "Are... Are you going to be okay?"
"Eventually." I mumbled, a single tear falling down my face. I barely noticed that Draco had come sit beside me before he pulled me close and let me cry into his shoulder. I always felt like he was quite mature for his age.
"You can always stay here if you want. I'm sure my mum and dad wouldn't mind." Draco said.
"Thank you." I mumbled.
"Is there anything I can get you to make you feel better?" Draco asked.
"Just don't go." I said and he held me tighter.
"Wouldn't dream of it." Draco said quietly.
I hadn't noticed we had fallen asleep there together when my eyes fluttered open around and I saw the silhouettes of Severus and Narcissa in the doorway.
"I should probably take y/n home." Severus said quietly.
"It's alright, just let her stay here. She's had a pretty rough day and deserves to have some time to process." Narcissa said. "I was around her age when my mum died. I remember that being alone was the last thing I wanted."
"You're probably right." Severus said.
"It's good for her to be with Draco. Those kids understand each other in a way that hardly any adults can comprehend." Narcissa said. "I wouldn't be surprised if the two of them fall in love when they're older. They seem absolutely perfect for each other."
"I just don't want her to be placed under 'his' custody. She doesn't deserve that." Severus said.
"We'll protect her as best we can." Narcissa said. "But you know better than I do that there's no stopping the Dark Lord."
