Chapter 13: The Confession

A couple of days passed after Alyssa's visit, and the memory of her interrogation faded just enough for me to feel somewhat normal again. She hadn't pushed too hard afterward, but I knew she was waiting for me to spill all the juicy details. That was Alyssa, always ready to dig deeper.

I had just finished breakfast when my phone buzzed with a message from her.

"We need to talk. Girl, I know something's up. Spill!"

I laughed, shaking my head. Of course, she wasn't going to let it go. I knew this was coming, but I wasn't sure how much I was ready to share with her. Adrian and I were in a good place, but it wasn't exactly... normal. How was I supposed to explain that to Alyssa without her flipping out?

I texted back: "Okay, okay. Come over later. I'll tell you."

My heart raced as I hit send. I'd have to tell her at least some of the truth. If I didn't, she'd never stop digging, and I was tired of dodging her questions. Adrian had told me he trusted me with whatever I decided to share, but even so, I was nervous about this.

A few hours later, Alyssa showed up at the door, her usual bubbly self but with that look in her eyes that said she was on a mission. As soon as she stepped inside, she went straight to the couch and patted the seat next to her.

"Alright, out with it. You've been acting weird, and I know there's more to this 'Adrian' guy than you've been letting on. What's the deal?"

I sat beside her, twisting my hands in my lap, trying to figure out where to start. "Okay, so... yeah, there's more to the story."

Alyssa leaned in, eyes wide, waiting for me to continue.

"You know how I said Adrian and I met through friends? Well... it wasn't exactly like that."

Alyssa's eyebrows shot up. "Oh? Go on..."

I took a deep breath. "We didn't really meet in a normal way. I kind of... ended up at his place, and he—he's the one who found me."

Alyssa stared at me, her expression shifting from curiosity to concern. "Wait, what? What do you mean he found you? Like, you were lost or something?"

"Not exactly," I said, my voice dropping. "It's complicated, Alyssa. I was in a bad situation, and he helped me... out of it."

Her face softened, but I could still see the questions burning in her eyes. "Are you saying he rescued you? From what?"

I didn't know how to explain everything, especially without making it sound more dangerous than it was. "It's hard to explain. But he's been taking care of me, and I—" I hesitated, feeling my chest tighten. "I feel safe with him."

Alyssa's eyes narrowed slightly. "Okay, but are you sure he's a good guy? I mean, you're living with him now. That's pretty intense. Do you trust him?"

I nodded, feeling more confident in that answer than I expected. "Yeah, I do. He's... different. He's done a lot for me."

Alyssa studied my face, her detective mode still on full blast, but she seemed to ease up a little. "Alright, I trust you. But I'm going to need more details at some point. You know I'm not going to just let this slide, right?"

I laughed softly. "I know. I'll tell you more when I'm ready."

She smiled, pulling me into a hug. "I just want you to be happy, you know?"

"I know," I said, hugging her back, grateful that she cared enough to ask all the tough questions. "I am happy. I promise."

Alyssa pulled back, giving me a playful smirk. "Well, if you're happy, that's what matters. But you can't leave me hanging forever, okay? I still need to meet him again, properly."

I rolled my eyes. "You'll get your chance. Trust me."
