Toru Hagakure POV
"What's taking him so long?" I muttered, clutching the USB tightly in my hand. My patience was wearing thin as time dragged on, my eyes constantly scanning the street for my father.
Finally, I saw him—stumbling toward me, laughing to himself. But my relief was short-lived when I noticed a tall man following closely behind him. My body tensed, instinctively dropping into a fighting stance.
'Who the hell is that?!'
"Dad, get back!" I shouted, launching myself at the stranger. My fist aimed straight for his face, but before I could land the punch, he effortlessly caught my wrist, stopping me in my tracks. I froze, my heart racing. He couldn't see me, but he still managed to block my attack—he predicted it.
He didn't even need to see me to block my attack.
I froze in shock. How did he—?
"Toru, stop!" My father's voice cut through the tension, and I turned to him, confused. He had stopped laughing, but there was still that irritating grin on his face.
"We're friends," he said, patting the man on the shoulder like they were old friends.
"Friends?" I repeated, my confusion deepening.
"We're partners, not friends," the man—Phoenix, apparently—said, rolling his eyes. His tone was sharp, dismissive.
"Whatever you say, pal." My father chuckled, clearly unbothered, and gave him another pat on the chest before walking over to me.
"Toru, meet Phoenix—our new partner in crime. Phoenix, this is my daughter, Toru."
Phoenix gave a casual wave, a faint smile playing on his lips. I didn't smile back. My gaze stayed locked on him, full of suspicion. Something about him didn't sit right with me.
"His quirk lets him manipulate fire," Dad explained casually. Phoenix, standing next to him, lifted his hand, and with a simple flick, a flame danced in his palm—controlled, fierce, and dangerously bright.
"You're the one who set the club on fire," I realized, my eyes narrowing as Phoenix flashed a sly grin.
"Sharp kid," he said, smirking at my father, who laughed like it was all a joke.
"She gets that from me," Dad boasted, throwing an arm around my shoulder, his usual carefree demeanour masking the tension in the air.
I didn't share their amusement. Instead, I leaned closer to my father, my voice low, meant only for him. "Are you sure we can trust him?"
Dad's smile faltered, but only for a second. He brushed off my concern with a loud, almost exaggerated voice, clearly wanting Phoenix to hear.
"Of course we can! The guy saved my hide earlier from that feathered menace," he said, clearly annoyed as he referred to Hawks. There was a bitterness in his tone that I wasn't used to.
Phoenix didn't miss my mistrust. His gaze locked onto mine, sharp and assessing. He didn't say anything, but I could tell he wasn't thrilled by my questioning. The air between us grew a little colder despite the heat from his quirk.
"Enough of that," Dad cut in, his voice suddenly shifting, becoming more serious, almost sober. "Did you get what I asked for, Toru?"
I didn't respond with words, just handed him the USB stick. His eyes gleamed with excitement as he snatched it from me, grinning like he had just hit the jackpot.
"Perfect," he muttered, turning the small device over in his hand before tucking it securely into his jacket pocket.
"We're not done yet," Dad said, his smile widening as he glanced at Phoenix. "Let's hit the next club and finish this little celebration."
