Elle watched out the window of the small coupe car that Glenn had managed to scrape up enough money for. He was not making much from his job delivering pizzas. The sun was drawing down behind the trees along the highway to Atlanta.
Glenn watched out the front of the car, his expression tense, eyes not leaving the car in front of him. His knuckles turned white from his tight hold on the stirring wheel.
Glancing over at Elle, Glenn relaxed slightly. His expression softened, and he gazed at her fondly. "Are you okay if I have a look around? Traffic won't be moving for a while," Glenn's voice was soft. He felt anxiety rising in himself at the thought of leaving her alone for too long.
Elle glanced over at him, her eyes slightly red. She wasn't surprised when his eyes filled with concern, his lips thinning.
Elle gave a forced smile, knowing full well Glenn wouldn't buy it. "Yeah, I'll be fine." She turned her head back towards the window, feeling her emotions bubbling to the surface again.
Feeling Glenn's eyes still own her she still didn't look back over at him, only after a few seconds did the driver-side door open before he closed it behind him.
Elle could feel tears brimming her eyes, now alone to leave her emotions out. She didn't want it to be true, dead people coming back to life. But she couldn't deny it anymore when she and her brother were almost food to one of those monsters.
Elle couldn't help the thought of everyone that had fallen already, she couldn't bear the thought of her best friend being gone forever, having so much ahead of him, being a reason for her to carry on her life even if her parents couldn't see it, besides Glenn all she had was Ethan, and now he might be gone.
Realizing the tears running down her cheek, Elle wipes them away with the back of her hand, her eyes catching a man jogging up between the cars with a woman following him before they stopped dead in their tracks. The woman covered her mouth, the man saying something going unheard by Eli through the car.
Elle opens the door hearing what she confirms to be a helicopter flying over them before dropping something into the city. Her eyes widen realizing what is happening.
Frantically looking around for Glenn, Elle can't help the anxious feeling that continues to make itself more present the longer she goes without seeing him. "Glenn," Her gaze flitting from person to person, still unable to find her brother. "Glenn!" Elle's voice calls out.
Panic jolts through Elle, the onyx sky setting in. Stepping out of the car looking at the man and woman as they start making their way back through the cars, Elle's eyes flitting between them.
Elle could ask them for help, but she didn't want to bother some strangers at a time like this.
Pulling her thoughts together, composing herself. Elle follows the two down between the cars, unsure of which way her brother originally went hoping it's the right way.
Looking out across the cars, a familiar baseball cap catches her attention pulling her away from the two she had originally started following. "Glenn!" She called out. She sighed with relief when he turned to her with a raised brow.
"Elle, I thought you were staying in the car, are you alright?" Glenn asked worriedly quickly looking over Elle, making sure she wasn't hurt.
Elle smiled at him, her anxiousness seemingly dissipating. "No, no. I'm fine Glenn, I just scared myself." Glenn's eyes flickered to hers, trying to determine if it was true.
Glenn looked behind himself, debating his next words carefully. "I talked to one of the families down there, and said they were setting up a camp. Offered me to come." Catching Elle's eyes again he could see she wasn't fond of the idea, of people she didn't know being there every morning.
"I know it's a lot to ask, b-but we don't know what's out there. I-" Glenn looked down at the ground in front of him, unable to find words.
Elle can tell this is all a lot not just for her, but for her brother too. Elle was never someone who enjoyed socializing, and Glenn was more of the social type. She couldn't find the ability to trust anyone so easily after what happened to her parents, she didn't understand it. She always had a hard time trusting people even before, but Glenn was always the opposite seemingly unaffected by that moment in their lives. But Elle knew otherwise.
Elle embraced Glenn, quickly having the gesture returned. "I trust you," Elle said simply, still holding tightly to him. She can feel him smile on her shoulder, causing her lips to curve into a grin.
Glenn's grip slowly loosened, pulling away and putting his hands on Elle's shoulders. "If anybody makes you feel uncomfortable, just tell me." His voice held a promise behind it, reassuring Elle all the more.
Elle gave Glenn a half smile with a small nod. "Okay,"
Following Glenn down between the cars stopping between an SUV and an old truck, seeing a group gathered. There were maybe four or five kids that she could see, a woman with gray hair holding tightly to her little girl, who she assumed was her dad stood beside them, arms crossed smoking a cigarette. standing in front of them talking stood the man and woman who ran past Elle earlier. Beside him stood a man similar to him in many ways, arms crossed as he watched them speak.
All heads turned to Glenn and Elle at their arrival. The woman Elle followed earlier greeted the two with a smile. The man though eyed her a moment turning to Glenn. "This her?"
Elle felt uneasy under his eyes, shifting slightly. "Yeah," Glenn glanced at Elle giving her reassurance.
Smiling shyly, Elle waved her hand gently. "Hi, I'm, I'm Elizabeth. You can just call me Elle though." Elle glanced between all of them not expecting the first voice she heard. "Nice to meet you, Shane Walsh."
Elle felt herself relax slightly, not sure why she was tense in the first place after his introduction.
Shane shifted out of the way giving Elle a view of the rest of the group. Elle glanced at Glenn before looking back to Shane listening to him introduce everyone. "This here's Morales and his family," He pointed to the father and mother who Elle hadn't seen before with their kids. "Lori and Carl." He gestured to the woman he was with earlier and her son. "Isaac," He gestured to the guy who looked very similar to himself.
Shane shifted gesturing to the back of the truck. "Carol and Ed, their daughter Sophia, and their son-"
"Ethan-" Elle gasped seeing the familiar face, his eyes wide, lips curving slightly with excitement. Quickly, his expression faltered, glancing at his father. Elle knew his father abused him and his family, and that's why they only ever hung out at school, he couldn't go anywhere and he wouldn't bring anyone to his house out of his fears.
Elle though didn't hesitate, hugging Ethan maybe a little too hard. "I thought you were gone," She whispered to him, relief settling in. Elle could tell Ethan was tense still unsure of what his father would think, humming in response he relaxed slightly.
Shane nodded firmly, glancing at Glenn. "Small world, ain't it?" Glenn looked at Shane, brows furrowed. He didn't know anything about this Ethan that Elle knew.
Glenn shook his thoughts away, he'd ask Elle about that later. "Yeah," He replied simply to Shane, smiling slightly, seeing his sister happy again.
