**Flashback Start**

Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji move to Beijing to get married, after which Lan Xichen's condition becomes worse as he drowns himself in alcohol every day after being betrayed.

The air in Lan Xichen's study is thick with despair, the smell of whiskey lingering like a haunting memory.

The walls are adorned with family portraits that seem to stare at Lan Xichen's, judging.

Lan Xichen sits slumped at his desk, a half-empty bottle before him, his fingers trembling as they grip the glass.

Lan Xichen is muttering, “Every day feels heavier. How did I let it come to this? Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji, you both were the nearest in my heart, then why did you both betray me together? I will never be able to forgive you both.”

Lan Xichen pours another drink, his hands shaking but outside, the laughter of children filters in, a stark reminder of the joy that has slipped through his fingers.

In the nursery, Jiang Yanli gently rocks their daughter, Lan Tingting, in her arms because the baby’s eyes brim with tears as she hears her father’s muffled sobs from the other room.

Jiang Yanli is soothing, “Shh, my sweet girl. It’s okay. Daddy’s just having a hard time.”

Lan Tingting’s whimpers intensify, echoing her father’s pain so Jiang Yanli’s heart aches; she knows she must be strong for both of them.

Few months have passed, and Lan Xichen has become a mere shadow of himself when Jiang Yanli manages the household with grace, but the weight of their situation grows heavier each day.

Jiang Yanli stands by the window, watching the garden, where their infant son, Lan Chong, lies sleeping.

Jiang Yanli is to herself, “How long can I carry this alone?”

Suddenly, Lan Xichen stumbles into the room, eyes red-rimmed and bloodshot as he looks lost, like a man searching for something he can’t find.

Lan Xichen says, “I can’t. I can’t keep doing this, Jiang Yanli.”

Jiang Yanli turns to Lan Xichen, her heart breaking at the sight of her husband in such despair.

Jiang Yanli says, “You don’t have to. I’m here. Please let me help you.”

Lan Xichen shakes his head, anger mixing with sadness as he says, “Help? What do you know of this pain? I’ve lost everything.”

Later that night, Lan Xichen sits alone in the dark, the only sound his quiet sobbing.

The weight of his grief presses down like a heavy blanket when Jiang Yanli enters cautiously, her heart heavy with worry.

Jiang Yanli says, “Lan Xichen, please. Talk to me.”

Lan Xichen looks up, eyes filled with anguish when he says, “What’s there to say? I’ve failed as a husband. as a father and as a brother.”
