Zhang Yuanqing's heart instinctively tightened. Just as he was about to sneak to the bedroom door to eavesdrop, he suddenly remembered something. He opened his phone and deleted the chat and call logs with Brother Bing.

He then carefully folded the letter Brother Bing had written to him, tucking it beneath the potted plant on the windowsill.

Only after these precautions did he feel at ease enough to crack open the door slightly and observe in secret.

From the entrance hall came his grandmother's voice, responding with a question instead of an answer:

"What do you need him for?"

She hadn't invited the investigators in, standing firmly at the door.

"We need to ask him a few questions. Here are our credentials."

The one speaking was a woman, her voice sultry.

Grandmother's eyes lingered on the credentials briefly before she frowned and stepped aside.

At the right moment, Zhang Yuanqing opened his door, scrutinizing the investigators as they entered the living room.

Leading them was a man dressed in a black suit, paired with a white shirt and a black waistcoat, an ebony cane in hand. His face was gaunt, adorned with a neatly trimmed mustache, and his slicked-back hair was immaculate.

This strong air of British sophistication, coupled with the mustache, inevitably brought to mind the image of a gentleman returned from studying abroad during the Republic of China era.

To his left stood a strikingly beautiful young female investigator, her features sharp and distinct, hinting at a mixed heritage. A smile played on her lips, and her large, bright eyes brimmed with vitality.

She stood around 175 cm tall, with legs that could rival a supermodel's. Clad in formal attire, the hem of her blouse was tucked into her trousers, accentuating her slender waist and full chest—a picture of professional elegance.

The last investigator wore a blank expression, framed by black-rimmed glasses. His slightly disheveled hair gave him the appearance of a stereotypical tech nerd.

"I'm Zhang Yuanqing. What do you want with me?"

As Zhang Yuanqing assessed them, the investigators were also sizing up the young man.

The mixed-race female investigator smiled warmly and said:

"We are investigators from the Kangyang District Security Bureau. We have a few questions to ask and would appreciate your cooperation."

"Alright..."

Zhang Yuanqing gestured for them to sit on the living room sofa. His grandmother poured water for the three investigators, her gaze filled with confusion as she stared at her grandson.

She couldn't fathom why the cheerful, sociable boy she had raised would need to be questioned by investigators from the Security Bureau.

The tech-savvy young investigator took out a small notebook and pen, twisting off the cap.

The man with slicked-back hair sat on the sofa, hands resting on his cane, his expression serious.

"Do you know Lei Yibing?"

So, they've come about Brother Bing... They're here so quickly... Zhang Yuanqing responded truthfully:

"We've been close friends since childhood. Why are you asking about him all of a sudden?"

A doubt crossed his mind. His cousin was the captain of the second team at the Kangyang District Security Bureau. If these three were conducting a home visit, they must have already checked his family background.
