Returning to camp with their hard-won supplies felt like a victory, but the tension among the survivors remained palpable. The encounter with the zombies had shaken everyone, and the uncertainty surrounding Senator Jackson still loomed large.
As they approached the camp, Sophia noticed the atmosphere had shifted. Survivors gathered around the fire, their expressions a mixture of relief and wariness. Hawk's hand tightened around her shoulder as they entered, a silent promise of support.
"We're back!" Hawk announced, and the group turned to face them, the firelight illuminating their anxious faces.
"Did you find anything?" one of the survivors asked, hope tinged with doubt.
"Yes," Sophia replied, gesturing to the supplies they had gathered. "But it was risky. We encountered a horde of zombies."
Gasps rippled through the crowd, and murmurs of fear filled the air. "And you brought back him?" one of the survivors spat, pointing at Jackson.
"I'm here to help," Jackson said, raising his hands defensively. "I've seen the horrors outside. I want to ensure your survival."
"Then why should we trust you?" another survivor challenged, crossing their arms. "You're just a politician."
Sophia felt the tension mount. "We need to focus on the immediate threat," she interjected, her voice steady. "We've secured supplies, but we can't let distrust tear us apart. We need to work together."
"Together?" someone scoffed. "And risk our lives because of some politician's empty promises?"
"Enough!" Hawk shouted, his voice cutting through the noise. "We're in a fight for survival. We can't afford to fracture. Jackson may have connections that could help us find a way to safety."
As the argument simmered down, Sophia took a deep breath. "Let's put it to a vote. We'll decide as a group whether we allow Senator Jackson to stay."
The survivors reluctantly agreed, and they gathered in a circle, the fire flickering as they debated the senator's fate. One by one, they voiced their opinions, the majority leaning toward suspicion but recognizing the need for collaboration.
Finally, after an intense discussion, they cast their votes. The majority decision was to allow Jackson to stay, but with strict conditions. "You'll earn our trust, but it will take time," one survivor said firmly.
Jackson nodded, a glimmer of gratitude in his eyes. "I understand. I'll do whatever it takes to prove myself."
That night, as Sophia lay in her tent, the weight of the day pressed down on her. The shadows of uncertainty danced in her mind, but she knew they had made the right choice—at least for now.
