"They just don't add up." I say, perplexed, at my desk in the office of the police station I worked out. "All these string of murders don't make sense. It's like the killer is targeting random people."
"Do killers always have to have a motive?" My partner in crime (literally), Tara Carpenter, walked in with two cups of coffee in her hands. "Is this case really stressing you out?"
"I don't know." I grumbled, collapsing in my chair and taking my hat off. "Killers usually always have a reason, psychotic or not. A reason is a reason."
"You know, there's not always a cause and effect in life." Tara sat beside me, leaning forward on her knees. "Sometimes shit just happens because it happens."
"What are you, a priest?" I snapped slightly, making Tara raise a brow at me. "I'm sorry- you're right, I'm sorry."
Tara smiled as she approached me, rubbing my shoulders. "Calm down, it'll be okay. We'll work through this like usual."
"Of course." I sighed a small breath of relief as someone knocked on the door. "Oh, hey, Don." My boyfriend, Donovan, pushing through with a small smile.
"Ready to go, babe?" Tara's hands dropped from my shoulders, stepping away distantly as she leaned against one of the desks.
"Yep." I huffed, gathering my belongings and looked to my partner who was staring at the ground. "See you tomorrow, Carpenter."
"Uh yep, yep. See ya." She saluted me with her back now turned towards me. I looked at Donovan who mouthed 'weirdo' which caused me to smack his shoulder roughly. He winced for a moment before taking my hand and guiding me outside of the office.
"I was thinking we go to my place, watch a movie, and you stay the night?" Don suggested, making me smile a little at the thought.
"Sure. That sounds nice."

I sat on Don's bed while he showered from his long day at work. I relaxed back in my pj's, searching through HBO for something good to watch. I finally decided on Godzilla and pressed play. I stood up and went to his closet, pushing the doors open in search of one of his hoodies. I finally found one, spotting something attached to the wall of his closet.
I managed to shove a few items out of the way. I slid his clothes over before a small gasp escaped my lips. It was a map - map of all the murders Tara and I have been investigating. He targeted them all, each one leading up to Tara for some ironic reason.
Oh my god. My boyfriend is a murder.
I heard the shower get turned off, meaning I had 2-3 minutes to get the fuck out before he walked out. I threw his hoodie off my body, throwing my slip on sneakers on my feet and grabbing my backpack. I tucked my phone in my pocket before storming downstairs.
"Y/N!" I heard Donovan call for me before I slammed his front door shut. I managed to steal the keys to my car from the kitchen table and turned it in. His door was thrown open, an angry expression on his face as I drove away. I quickly dialed 911, telling them his address and what had happened while I made my getaway.
I didn't know where I would drive but I somehow found myself outside of Tara's house. I parked the car, continuously checking over my shoulder in the middle of the night. I knocked rapidly on her door, it only took a minute or two before she opened it.
"L/N? What're you doing here?" Tara pushed the door open, allowing me inside.
"I-I found out t-thag Donovan i-is the killer w-we've been searching for a-and I ran before he could do anything." I sat, shivering coldly on her couch. Tara immediately wrapped a blanket around me, sitting beside me.
"Did you call the cops?"
"I did. And left." My breathing was getting heavier and heavier as I let my fear overtake me.
"Hey, sweetheart. Look at me." Tara's gentle voice pulled me out. She cupped my chin, forcing me to look at her. "Just take deep breaths, everything's okay now. You're safe. I promise." Tara placed her just-in-case gun on the coffee table to reassure me. "Deep breath in... and out. Good, you can do this, honey."
I followed her instructions for a minute before I felt myself calming down. "I'm sorry." I feebly whispered.
Tara shook her head. "Never be sorry, it's okay, Y/N/N. I promise you're safe with me." She wrapped her arm around my shoulders.
"Thank you." I relaxed into her side. I couldn't lie - the closeness of us right now made my heart race - in a good way. I had always had a crush on Tara but when I figured it wasn't reciprocal, I moved on and started dating Donovan. It didn't mean that I was fully over her though.
I looked up at her from her shoulder, watching Tara shift her head to look at me. "What?" She whispered softly, tucking a strand of loose hair behind my ear.
"Nothing." I inched closer to her, making her breath hitch. Soon enough, we were slowly kissing. Her lips were so soft and they moved perfectly in sync with mine.
"You don't know how long I waited for that." Tara immediately stated when we pulled away.
I giggled a little, grabbing her face softly. "Honestly, me too."
"Fuck Donovan." Tara scoffed, looking at me with a smile.
"Yeah." I laughed. "Fuck Donovan."
