Chapter 15: Unraveling the Threads

The morning sun broke over the horizon, casting a warm glow across the village as Aarav, Neha, Priya, and Rohit made their way through the narrow, winding streets. The air was crisp, infused with the scent of fresh earth and blooming flowers. Each step felt purposeful, driven by the weight of their mission.

“Do you think the villagers will even talk to us?” Neha asked, her voice a mix of hope and apprehension. She fidgeted with the strap of her bag, glancing around as if expecting someone to jump out and confront them.

Aarav glanced at her, offering a reassuring smile. “If we approach them with respect and honesty, I believe they will. They need to know we’re here to help.”

Priya nodded, her eyes scanning the surroundings. “We’re not here to stir up old fears. We want to understand and bring closure.”

Rohit, ever the optimist, chimed in, “Plus, we’ve freed the spirits. That should count for something, right?”

As they approached the village square, they noticed a group of elderly villagers gathered around a small, makeshift stall where a woman was selling fresh produce. The vibrant colors of the fruits and vegetables seemed to brighten the somber atmosphere.

“Let’s start there,” Priya suggested, pointing towards the group. “They might have some stories to share.”

As they approached, the villagers looked up, some faces displaying curiosity, others wariness. Aarav stepped forward, raising his hands in a gesture of peace.

“Good morning! We’re here to listen and learn,” he said, his voice steady. “We want to understand the protector and the history of this village.”

An elder with silver hair and deep-set eyes stepped forward. “The protector is a painful memory for us,” she said, her voice gravelly but filled with warmth. “What do you wish to know?”

“We want to help,” Neha interjected, her sincerity shining through. “We believe understanding his story is the key to breaking the cycle of fear and darkness.”

The elder studied them for a moment, her gaze penetrating. “Very well. But be warned: the truth can be more terrifying than the tales themselves.”

“Tell us everything,” Rohit urged, leaning forward, eager to absorb the knowledge.

The elder sighed deeply, looking around at her companions who nodded in encouragement. “Long ago, the protector was revered as a guardian spirit. He watched over us, ensuring our safety and prosperity. But when misfortune fell upon the village—a series of unexplained tragedies—fear took root in our hearts.”

“What kind of tragedies?” Aarav asked, a knot tightening in his stomach.

“Crops failed, livestock fell ill, and strange accidents occurred. The villagers whispered that the protector had become angry, that he was punishing us for some unknown sin. Fear twisted our minds, and instead of seeking answers, we turned against him.”
