Kartik sat on his bed, staring out the window at the stormy sky.
His thoughts were heavier than the clouds gathering outside.
Today had been particularly taxing; he couldn't rid himself of the nagging, crawling uncertainty in the pit of his stomach. His mother had shown the smallest sign of improvement in her health, but there was an unperceivable weight still pressing down on him.
He took out his phone and scrolled through the contact list until he found Meera's name. Memories of their laughter and late-night study sessions flooded his mind like a deluge of nostalgia. He paused for a second, his finger hovering over the call button. Would she even want to speak to him after all this time?
His breath shook as he pressed the call button. The tones rang, increasing his unease, until finally, she picked up.
"Hey, Kartik!" Meera's voice burst through the line, bright and inviting.
"Hi, Meera. How are you?" Kartik replied, his heart racing.
"I'm doing great! Just visiting my family. How about you? How's everything with your mom?"
Kartik swallowed, feeling his stomach twist. "It's... better, I think. She's responding to treatment, but it's been tough. I've been feeling a bit lost, to be honest."
"Of course. It's completely understandable. If you need to talk or anything, I'm here for you." Her sincerity cut through the haze of his thoughts.
"Thanks. I really appreciate it," he said, feeling warmth spread through him.
"So, how has it been coming back home? Do you miss the chaos of college?"
Kartik smiled, letting his tension ease. "A little bit. It's too quiet here without Sakshi and my friends. It feels like a ghost town."
"I can't even imagine. It must be hard for you."
"Yeah. I miss the normalcy, I guess." He paused, thoughtful. "You know, things felt different when we were studying together. I had a purpose."
Meera laughed softly. "Those were the days, right? Late-night cramming sessions and all the caffeine we could handle."
"Exactly! I still can't believe you managed to pull off that last-minute study session before the exams."
"It's all about strategy!" she teased, and Kartik could almost picture her playful grin.
As their conversation continued, Kartik felt the clouds of uncertainty lift, replaced by a lightness he hadn’t felt in days. "So, how have things been with your family? I remember you talking about some pressures from them regarding your future."
"Yeah, it's been a challenge. They have high expectations, you know? Sometimes I wish I could just do what I want without worrying about what everyone else would think," Meera said, a note of frustration in her voice.
