Lily woke feeling delightfully warm and hummed slightly as she shifted where she lay.
Beneath her head, she felt motion, and everything came rushing back to her at once: the restlessness, the spilled water, the show, James. James.
Her eyes flew open as she realized where she was. Her head was firmly placed in his lap, her hand beneath her cheek resting on the curve of his thigh. His hand was on her lower back, his fingertips brushing lightly against where her shirt had ridden up throughout the night.
Oh God, Lily thought, as James' stomach expanded behind her head. I'm asleep on James Potter. Her mind screamed it.
Then, a giggle came from across the room. Lily's eyes pinched shut—anything but this.
She sat up abruptly and turned over the back of the couch to peer into the kitchen where Marlene sat at the island, nursing a bowl of cereal.
They raised a brow as they raised their spoon to their mouth, a smirk forming around the utensil.
The two were locked in a staring match, Marlene looking smug and Lily begging her not to be.
A grumble came from beside Lily, followed by a soft, "Hey, Evans."
Marlene bolted from the room, the porch's sliding glass door shutting with a snap behind them.
James' arm was still wrapped around Lily's waist, a fact she was acutely aware of as she turned back to him. "Hi," she whispered. Her voice cracked.
He had a red patch on his cheek from where it had been resting on his shoulder and an angry indent on his nose where his glasses must have pressed throughout the night. Still, his eyes lit up when she looked at him, and no one had ever looked more gorgeous.
James ruffled his hair, though it hardly could get any messier, and gave Lily a lopsided grin. "I was thinking of going kayaking today," he said casually, letting Lily decide what to make of the statement.
She took the bait. "I'll go and change into my bathing suit."
As James pulled his arm back to his side, Lily shivered at the motion. In his moment of triumph, James smiled.

Lily exhaled loudly as soon as her door shut. The skin of her back still tingled where his hand had once been. She reached behind her, feeling the goosebumps as her heart raced.
"It's just kayaking," she said to herself, abruptly shaking out her limbs and stalking over to her suitcase. Not like he asked you to marry him!
He was just James: confident, persistent, admittedly attractive James. The fact that her blood now rushed through her veins to heat her cheeks whenever he looked at her changed nothing. He was just a boy, and she was just a girl, and she could handle kayaking.
