The sun hung low in the sky, casting a golden glow over the water. The soft sound of waves crashing against the shore was the only thing that filled the quiet air. Babe stood at the edge of the water, the cool breeze tugging at his clothes as he gazed out at the endless horizon.
He closed his eyes for a moment, taking in the peace, the calm. It had been months since the confrontation with Ed, months since they'd finally laid the past to rest. But for the first time in his life—this life, and the one before—Babe felt a sense of true freedom.
The burden of his past life, the pain, the loss—it had all finally begun to fade. There were still moments when the memories would surface, still flashes of heartache. But they no longer controlled him. He was no longer trapped by the weight of what had been.
"Hey," Billy's voice came from behind him, warm and familiar. "What are you thinking about?"
Babe smiled as he opened his eyes, turning to see Billy walking toward him. His heart swelled at the sight of him—tall, strong, his dark hair tousled by the wind. Billy looked more at ease now, too, more relaxed than Babe had ever seen him. It was as if the guilt and shame he had carried for so long had finally melted away.
"I was thinking about how peaceful it is," Babe said softly, his smile widening as Billy came to stand beside him. "It's nice, isn't it?"
Billy slipped his arm around Babe's waist, pulling him close. "It's perfect," he murmured, pressing a soft kiss to Babe's temple. "Just like you."
Babe rolled his eyes playfully, but his smile never faltered. "You're so cheesy."
"Only for you," Billy teased, his voice low and affectionate. "Always for you."
They stood together in comfortable silence for a while, watching the waves roll in and out. The beach had always been Babe's favorite place—there was something about the endless horizon that made him feel small in the best way. Like the world was so much bigger than the pain he had once carried.
Billy had known that, of course. It was why he had brought Babe here, to this quiet beach far from the noise and chaos of the city. It was his way of showing Babe that they were starting fresh, that their future was wide open—just like the ocean before them.
"I'm glad we came here," Babe said after a while, resting his head against Billy's shoulder. "I needed this."
Billy hummed in agreement, his fingers tracing gentle circles on Babe's back. "I thought you might. You've been through a lot."
"We both have," Babe corrected, glancing up at him with a soft smile. "But we made it through, didn't we?"
Billy's eyes softened, and he nodded. "Yeah, we did."
There was a pause, and then Babe grinned mischievously. "So, when do we go to your favorite place?"
Billy chuckled, his eyes lighting up with amusement. "You mean the golf resort I told you about?"
Babe wrinkled his nose, but he was still smiling. "Golf is so boring."
Billy laughed, leaning down to kiss Babe's forehead. "Maybe, but you promised. You'll give it a try, right?"
Babe sighed dramatically, but his eyes were twinkling. "Fine. But only because I love you."
They spent the rest of the day walking along the beach, their fingers intertwined as they talked about everything and nothing. It was easy now, being with Billy. There were no more secrets between them, no more hidden fears or unspoken words. They had laid everything bare, and now they were building something new together—something that belonged entirely to them.
As the sun began to set, casting a warm, golden glow over the water, Babe turned to Billy, his expression soft. "Thank you," he said quietly.
Billy raised an eyebrow, his lips quirking into a smile. "For what?"
"For everything," Babe replied, his voice full of emotion. "For loving me. For fighting for us. For giving me a second chance."
Billy's smile softened, and he pulled Babe into a gentle embrace. "You don't need to thank me for that," he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "I'll always fight for you. For us. No matter what."
They stood there, wrapped in each other's arms, as the last rays of sunlight disappeared below the horizon. And for the first time in a long time, Babe felt truly at peace.
Their past had been full of pain and heartache, but their future was theirs to create. And as long as they were together, Babe knew they could handle anything.
