Mari Wyatt was just seven years old the first time she fainted. Alone, in her yet-to-be-painted bedroom. There was a flash of darkness, and her heart gave a painful lurch, like it always did when she lost her footing. It felt like a dream, only she was watching from a distance instead of seeing it through her mind's eye. She saw her bedroom walls coated in pink paint the shade of cotton candy. And then she woke up with the taste of pennies in her mouth.
It was closer to a nightmare, if she was honest. Mari had always detested the colour pink. Purple was far more appealing. If she'd been able to get . . . any words around her tongue at that point in time, she would've told her father as much, but, alas, it was her age of silence. Instead, she opted to drag her pink crayon over a sheet of paper until there was nothing left of it.
He discovered the drawing later that night after tucking her in ── she watched him fold it and slip it into his pocket.
When she came home the next day, her brain's concoction had been made a reality. All four walls were a nauseating pink that brought moisture to her eyes. It was that day she decided, perhaps prematurely, that nobody would ever understand her, and there was no point in wasting time trying to make them.
Ten years down the line, it lands her a harrowing ultimatum; maintain her silence and risk the high likelihood of being committed to a mental institution, or leave a twelve-year-old boy stranded in the clutches of a creature determined to rip the flesh from his bones.

this is the third iteration of this story, and i sincerely hope the final. i hold this plot close to my heart, so i hope i can finally get it out of my mind and do it justice.
