Kio shook his head, looking down at the floor. “It’s not you. It’s me.”

Cassie felt her throat tighten. The words she had dreaded hearing for weeks. “What does that mean? Are you seeing someone else?”

There was a long silence. Kio didn’t say anything, but the look on his face was enough. He didn’t need to answer. Cassie felt the air leave her lungs, her worst fear suddenly a reality. Tears welled up in her eyes, but she blinked them away, refusing to let him see her break.

“How long?” she whispered, her voice trembling.

Kio finally met her gaze, guilt flashing across his face. “I didn’t mean for this to happen, Cassie. I swear. It just… it just kind of did.”
