Azriel sat in the war room of the House of Wind, the light filtering through the stained glass windows casting muted shadows across the table. He stared down at the maps laid out before him, but his mind was far from the strategies and reconnaissance plans. The distant pull toward Skye lingered, gnawing at his thoughts like a wound that refused to heal.
Rhysand and Cassian entered the room, talking in low tones, and Morrigan trailed behind, her sharp gaze landing on Azriel almost immediately. He felt the shift in the air as they joined him at the table, the atmosphere turning heavy as they each settled into their seats.
Cassian took one look at Azriel's expression and let out a low whistle. "You look like you've just spent a week in the Court of Nightmares," he said with a half-smile. "Rough day?"
Azriel merely grunted, his eyes flicking up to meet Cassian's. "Something like that."
Rhysand arched a brow, folding his arms as he leaned back in his chair. "Trouble with Skye?"
Azriel tensed. He wasn't one to share the intricacies of his personal life, even with his closest friends. But lately, the distance between him and Skye was beginning to wear on him. He felt split, as if he was living two lives, neither one of them whole. He tried to focus on his duties, but thoughts of Skye always lingered, a persistent distraction.
Morrigan tilted her head, studying him with a sympathetic smile. "Azriel, you're pulling yourself apart. We can see it."
He sighed, rubbing a hand over his face. "It's just... complicated. We barely see each other. Skye's got her responsibilities, I have mine. Sometimes, I wonder if we're doing more harm than good."
Rhysand shared a look with Cassian before leaning forward. "Long-distance relationships are never easy, Az. It's like stretching a cord over a chasm—you either pull closer or snap apart. Where do you see yourself with her?"
Azriel considered the question, his heart tugging painfully. "She's important to me, Rhys. I've never met anyone like her. She challenges me, grounds me. But... she's also tied to her own court, and I have my duties here. I feel like I'm living two separate lives, neither one fully."
Cassian placed a hand on Azriel's shoulder, his expression gentle. "You don't have to do this alone, you know. If you're struggling, talk to us."
Azriel managed a small smile, appreciating the sentiment. "I know, Cass. But I'm not sure talking is going to fix this."
Morrigan's gaze was piercing as she spoke. "Azriel, have you considered that maybe... you're not fully satisfied? Maybe you're looking for something that Skye can't give you."
Azriel's head snapped up, meeting her eyes with a frown. "What are you trying to say, Morrigan?"
She shrugged, unfazed by his reaction. "Just that you're someone who values loyalty, someone who needs certainty. This back-and-forth, the constant distance, it's not who you are. If you're questioning this now, what happens when things get even more complicated?"
Rhysand's eyes softened. "Mor has a point. It's not just about the connection you have; it's about whether that connection can survive the distance, the demands of your roles. You're both High Lords in your own right, Az. Maybe that's not something you can easily reconcile."
Azriel clenched his fists, struggling to keep his composure. "I thought love was supposed to be enough," he said quietly.
Cassian let out a deep sigh. "Love is enough, but love also takes work. If you're sacrificing parts of yourself to make this work, you need to ask if that's sustainable in the long run."
Azriel's gaze fell back to the map in front of him, his thoughts swirling. Was he truly sacrificing too much? He had always believed in duty, in loyalty, but this constant tug between his life in Velaris and his bond with Skye was slowly eroding his sense of purpose. He wasn't sure how much longer he could continue being two different people—Azriel, the Shadowsinger of the Night Court, and Azriel, the man Skye loved.
Morrigan's voice broke the silence. "Azriel, maybe it's time to have an honest conversation with Skye about where this is headed. You owe it to yourself—and to her."
Rhysand nodded, his expression thoughtful. "We've all seen what it's like to live divided. It's not fair to either of you to continue like this if you're both struggling."
Azriel swallowed hard, the weight of their words pressing down on him. He knew they were right. He had been avoiding the inevitable, hoping that things would fall into place, but the truth was, he couldn't keep living like this. He had to confront his own doubts, even if it meant risking the bond he shared with Skye.
He took a deep breath, glancing at each of them in turn. "You're right. I need to figure this out—for both our sakes."
Cassian patted him on the back, offering a reassuring smile. "Whatever happens, we're here for you. Just don't lose yourself in the process."
Azriel nodded, a mixture of gratitude and apprehension filling him. He knew that the path ahead wouldn't be easy, but he couldn't ignore the shadows of doubt that lingered in his mind. He had to face them head-on, even if it meant questioning everything he thought he knew about love, loyalty, and the future he wanted with Skye.
As the meeting drew to a close, Azriel found himself lingering, lost in thought. His friends had given him the perspective he needed, but it didn't make the decision any easier. He knew he had to talk to Skye, to confront the growing distance between them. But he also knew that doing so might change everything.
The uncertainty gnawed at him, a constant reminder of the choices he had yet to make. He loved Skye, but love alone couldn't bridge the chasm between their worlds. And as much as he wanted to believe that they could make it work, he couldn't ignore the shadows of doubt that had taken root in his heart.
For the first time, Azriel found himself questioning whether the life he had always known was enough, or if he was destined for something more—a future that might not include the woman he loved.
And that thought terrified him more than any enemy he had ever faced.
