Azriel had prepared himself for many things since his return to Velaris, but he hadn't prepared for this: to see Skye, not only with another man but with her husband. And yet, fate had a way of forcing him to confront what he'd rather avoid. He hadn't expected her to be back in Velaris, much less to run into her on this quiet afternoon. But there she was, standing alongside her husband, whose gentle smile was a stark reminder of all that Azriel had lost.
They met eyes, and Azriel's heart thudded painfully. He forced himself to breathe, to keep his expression neutral. There was a part of him that wanted to turn and walk away, to avoid the confrontation entirely. But he owed her at least a civil exchange, especially given everything that had happened.
"Skye," he greeted her, voice steady despite the storm in his chest.
Her husband stepped back a little, sensing their need for privacy. Azriel noticed the quiet respect in his gaze, a trust that made Azriel's heart twist even more. Skye looked different. There was a calmness to her now, a quiet confidence that seemed to have blossomed fully in the time they had been apart. She returned his greeting, her voice carrying an air of finality he wasn't prepared for.
They stood there, words hanging unsaid between them until Skye broke the silence. "It's strange, isn't it? How paths cross even when we think they've already diverged."
Azriel nodded, feeling the weight of her words. "I never expected to see you here."
She glanced at her husband before looking back at Azriel. "He had business in Velaris, and I decided to accompany him. I thought it was time I returned, even if only briefly."
The ache in Azriel's chest grew. "How are you?" He needed to know, even if the answer stung.
"I'm good, Azriel," she said simply. "Better than I ever thought I'd be."
Her tone wasn't harsh; it was honest, filled with a contentment he hadn't heard before. Azriel swallowed, fighting against the turmoil inside him. "I'm glad to hear that," he replied, meaning it. "You deserve that happiness, Skye."
She looked at him for a moment, her gaze steady. "Azriel, I want you to know... I did love you. Deeply. But with him, I don't feel like I need to prove myself constantly. I don't feel like I have to be someone else to be worthy."
Azriel felt a painful twist in his chest, but he nodded. "I understand." And he did. He understood that she had found something he hadn't been able to give her.
"Sometimes, I wondered if you even knew what you wanted," she continued, her words soft. "Or if you were just holding onto an idea of us, rather than the reality. But with him, I'm just... enough."
Azriel felt the weight of his mistakes pressing down on him, regrets filling the spaces in his heart where her love used to reside. "I'm sorry," he murmured, voice barely above a whisper. "For everything."
Skye's expression softened, and she reached out to touch his arm briefly. "I don't hate you, Azriel. I want you to know that. We just... weren't right for each other."
He nodded, finally accepting the truth he'd been avoiding. "I hope he treats you the way you deserve."
Her eyes held a hint of sadness, but also relief. "He does. He always has." She gave him a final, small smile before turning back to join her husband, who was waiting a short distance away, giving them the space they needed.
As he watched her walk away, hand-in-hand with the man who had given her what he couldn't, Azriel felt a profound sense of loss. But also, finally, a sense of peace. She had moved on, and he realized now that he needed to do the same. It was time to close this chapter, to let go of the love he had clung to for so long.
Watching her disappear down the path, he took a deep breath, feeling the weight of her words settle within him. Skye was right. It was time he figured out what he truly wanted—without holding onto ghosts of the past.
With a final glance, Azriel turned and walked away, letting her go in his heart for good. This was their end, and though it ached, he found the strength to take his next step forward, ready for whatever awaited him beyond her memory.
