Work went by a bit quicker for Lance now, especially this month. The sense of guilt he had felt for the past few days kept him anchored to the ground, now that he had gotten it all out of him, he felt more airy, lighter. And surprisingly, he and Keith hadn't bickered, not even once, just light bantering. That was a surprise for everyone. Allura was most certainly pleased though, although she still wanted them to continue their after work practices, for good measure.
After work ended, the two boys began to work on their staging and lines, it only got awkward when they got to the scene where they had to... yeah.
"So," Lance started, "wanna practice that now?"
"What?! Lance no! We are not kissing today."
"Chill dude! I was just joking." Lance began to laugh at the look of distraught on Keith's face, correction, Keith's pretty face. When his laughter started to die down, he noticed Keith was staring at him, a different look on his face. Admiration, Lance thought. It wasn't until a minute or so later that he realized that he was staring too, both of them were looking at each other, and Lance could feel his face melting into admiration for the actor he saw before him.
It was Keith who snapped out of the spell first with a quiet gasp, quickly turning his head away from him. Lance then broke out of it too, face heating up too much for comfort. They continued to work for another hour before Lance had thought of something. Something crazy.
What if he asked Keith out?
It sounded like an insane idea, which it really was. But he strangely felt quite a bit of confidence with his chances. He could make up some sort of excuse to make it seem like it was casual, like memorizing lines. Oh who was he kidding? Keith was a cool, edgy, emo guy with a motorcycle. Way too cool for a guy like Lance. The idea was stupid to begin with anyway so why would–
"Lance?"
"Yeah?"
"Don't take this the wrong way, but, I was wondering if you'd want to..." Keith paused, twirling his hair, as if searching for the right words. "Ok look, it's just for memorizing our lines and all that, so, do you think you would wanna go to a café or something with me?"
Had Keith read his mind? Or was he thinking the same thing Lance was? He would've obsessed over the thought of Keith taking him out, but he didn't want to leave the question unanswered. So, he decided a bit of teasing would be a good way to respond.
"Are you asking me out on a date?"
"LANCE WHAT OH MY GOD NO."
"ARE YOU BLUSHING?! OH YOU'RE TOTALLY BLUSHING."
"I'M NOT."
"I never thought I'd see the day I could manage to get you to blush."
"So I get flustered easily. What about it?"
"You just made a very big deal about it less than 30 seconds ago."
"Am I going to get an answer? Or are you just stalling?"
"Are you admitting that you're taking me out on a date?"
"Stop stalling, Lance. And if you really want to, it could be."
"W-what?"
"If you're so stuck on the idea that I'm supposedly taking you out on a date, then why not make it one? Besides, it's not like we're seriously dating or anything. We practice, do the show for a few nights, and then we're done. And you said it yourself, you said we should try to find ways to make kissing each other more bearable, maybe getting to know each other over coffee would work?"
"WELL I wasn't ACTUALLY offering. But I guess since you're offering... it's a date? Just pick me up at my house at 3 tomorrow. There's a new café downtown that I've been wanting to try out so we can just go there. Sound good?"
"Sounds great. But I only have my motorcycle? So how are we–"
"It'll be fine! I'm sure you've been through worse," Lance said, although he was internally screaming at the fact he would be so close to Keith, and the thought of the amount of physical contact he'd have to go through was enough to make him giddy like a little schoolgirl. He was able to keep the giddiness down for the time being, he'd just have to wait until he got home to squeal his heart out.
"Oh," Keith responded, "well then... I guess I'll see you tomorrow?"
"Yep! Nos vemos mañana hermoso," said Lance, smirking playfully at what he had just said, knowing Keith didn't understand. Nevertheless, Keith's face still managed to brighten even more as he walked out the door.
If only Lance could truly know how Keith felt.
