„In the hush of rain-soaked nights, their wounds lay bare—two broken souls, drawn together by the sharp edges of pain and secrets that refused to fade."
Akaya's POV
The tension in the car was suffocating. The low hum of the engine and the rhythmic patter of rain on the windows were the only sounds filling the enclosed space. Akaya kept her gaze locked on the dark, wet road ahead, refusing to look at her father. They drove in silence, the weight of their earlier argument still hanging between them like a noose.
Her father, Atsushi, sat rigidly in the driver's seat, his knuckles white against the steering wheel. Akaya could feel his anger radiating off him, could hear it in the clipped breaths he took every few seconds. She knew he wanted to confront her about the stranger, to dig for answers she had no intention of giving.
When they pulled into the driveway of their estate, he killed the engine, but neither of them moved. It was as if they were waiting, daring the other to make the first move. Akaya felt the familiar tightening in her chest—the anticipation of another confrontation, another round of words that cut like knives.
"Who was he?" Atsushi's voice was low and controlled, but there was an edge to it that told Akaya he was barely holding back his fury.
She turned to face him, her eyes cold and unyielding. "I told you, he was no one."
"Don't lie to me." His voice was sharper now, dangerous. He slammed his hand against the steering wheel, the sudden force making her flinch. "You think I don't know when you're lying, Akaya? I know every corner of this city, every player in it, and I will find out who he is."
"I don't owe you an explanation," she snapped, her temper flaring despite her best efforts to stay calm. "I can handle myself. I'm not a child anymore, and you don't get to control every aspect of my life."
"Don't you understand?" he growled, his face inches from hers. "This isn't about control. It's about survival. You don't know what's at stake."
She leaned back against the door, staring at him with a defiance that was almost reckless. "Then tell me," she challenged, her voice barely more than a whisper. "Tell me what's really at stake, because all I see is a man trying to control his daughter's every move out of fear."
He looked at her, and for a moment she saw something break behind his eyes—something raw and vulnerable that vanished almost as quickly as it had appeared. Without another word, he pushed open the door and stepped out, slamming it shut behind him. Akaya waited until she heard his footsteps fade away before letting out a shaky breath.
She felt the anger drain from her, leaving behind a hollow ache she couldn't name. Part of her wanted to follow him, to demand answers he would never give, but the larger part of her—the part that had been wounded too many times to count—stayed rooted in her seat. She was tired of being the dutiful daughter, tired of being the one who always stayed silent.
She got out of the car and headed straight for her room, shutting the door behind her. She was still trembling from the encounter, still caught in the storm of her own emotions. The stranger's face flashed through her mind, his unreadable eyes, his calm, almost mocking smile. She didn't know why she had felt the need to lie to her father, but something in her instincts told her that the man she had seen in the shadows was not to be exposed—not yet.
Collapsing onto her bed, she stared up at the ceiling, feeling the weight of everything press down on her chest. The memories of her mother's death, of the way her father had changed afterward, came rushing back. She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to block it out, but the images refused to leave.
