„Each turn of fate drew them closer, yet she remained a whisper in the wind, just out of reach"
Jungkook's POV
The sound of her engine still rang in his ears, even as he sat in the dark, empty parking lot of the industrial zone, the rumble of his own car dying down to silence. She had gotten away. Again. Jungkook's fingers clenched around the steering wheel, the muscles in his jaw tight with the bitter sting of frustration.
She was fast, he had to give her that. Fast enough to outmaneuver him in a way that few others ever had. He had almost had her—almost cornered her in those tight, winding streets—but she had slipped through his fingers like smoke, leaving him behind in a haze of tail lights and raw fury.
"Damn it," he muttered, slamming his palm against the dashboard with a force that made the whole car shudder. He sat there, breathing heavily, his pulse pounding in his temples as he stared at the empty road ahead, half-expecting her to come back. But she was long gone. He knew she wouldn't return.
He wasn't used to this—wasn't used to losing. Not when he had been so close, when he had felt her presence, the electricity of their race pulsing between them with every twist and turn. He'd seen it in her eyes, that flash of something raw and unguarded when he had pulled up beside her, as if she'd felt it too—the thrill, the danger, the challenge that neither of them could seem to resist.
But then she had cut him off, the sudden movement forcing him to brake hard, and by the time he'd recovered, she had already vanished into the night, leaving him alone with nothing but the echo of her taillights.
Jungkook's grip on the wheel tightened, and he forced himself to take a steadying breath. It didn't matter. He still had a mission to complete, still had his father's orders hanging over his head like a blade. He wasn't supposed to be chasing her for the thrill of it. This wasn't some game.
His father had made that very clear.
"She's dangerous, Jungkook. A liability. I need you to watch her, find out what she knows. And if she's a threat... you know what to do."
The memory of his father's voice was like a cold fist tightening around his heart, and Jungkook leaned back in the driver's seat, staring up at the cracked, graffiti-covered walls of the abandoned warehouse nearby. It was always the same—his father's cold, calculating gaze watching him, expecting him to follow orders without question. Expecting him to be the perfect son, the perfect weapon.
And now, his target was her. The girl who had slipped through his fingers twice now, the girl who seemed to draw him in even as she pushed him away.
Akaya.
He didn't know what she was hiding, but he knew it was something. She wouldn't be running so hard, wouldn't be looking over her shoulder with that guarded, almost haunted look if she wasn't hiding something big. But every time he got close, every time he tried to pull her secrets from her, she shut him out.
Except for tonight.
For a moment, he had seen something in her eyes—something that told him she wasn't just running for the thrill of it. She was running because she was afraid, because she knew what would happen if she stopped. But what was it that made her so scared? What was she running from?
Jungkook exhaled sharply, raking a hand through his hair as he tried to clear his head. He needed to be smart about this. He couldn't just chase her blindly, couldn't let himself get caught up in whatever this was between them. He had to think, had to plan. She wasn't going to make this easy, and the more he pushed, the more she would dig her heels in.
