The morning dawned bright and clear, a stark contrast to the storm brewing in Seraphina's heart. After a restless night filled with twisting thoughts and half-formed plans, she rose with determination. Today, she and Ashford would make their move towards seeking out Lord Harrington, a man known for his connections and a reputation that had survived the treacherous waters of London's high society.
Seraphina dressed quickly, her thoughts lingering on the possible repercussions of their actions. Would Lord Harrington be willing to help them? What if he turned them away, or worse, informed Montrose of their intentions? Despite her worries, she knew they could not afford to delay. They needed allies, and Harrington was their best chance at securing information about Montrose's plans.
After a quick breakfast, Seraphina met Ashford in the study. He was pacing, his brow furrowed in concentration, and the sight of him gave her a surge of confidence.
"Have you made any progress on how to approach Lord Harrington?" she asked as she entered the room.
Ashford turned to her, a look of resolve replacing his earlier tension. "I've thought about it. He frequents the opera and social gatherings, particularly the ones that attract the upper echelon of society. We might catch him at the upcoming performance of 'The Marriage of Figaro.' It's supposed to be quite the spectacle."
Seraphina nodded, her mind racing with possibilities. "That could work. We can present ourselves as just another couple enjoying the evening's entertainment. It would give us a chance to gauge his disposition without raising any alarms."
"Exactly," Ashford said, the tension in his posture easing slightly. "But we need to ensure we don't draw attention to ourselves. Montrose is everywhere, and he has ears everywhere as well."
Seraphina agreed, her heart beating faster at the thought of facing Montrose's network of spies. "Then we'll go in with the guise of simply enjoying the performance. We'll have to watch for a moment when we can speak to him privately."
The opera was set for that evening, and the hours until then felt like an eternity. Seraphina busied herself with preparations, ensuring her gown was impeccable and that her demeanor was poised. She chose a deep emerald green dress that complemented her complexion, the color symbolizing both elegance and determination.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the streets of London glimmered with gas lamps, casting an inviting glow over the bustling city. They arrived at the opera house, a grand structure alive with music and laughter. The air was thick with anticipation as the elite of society mingled, their voices rising above the sounds of orchestral warm-ups echoing from within.
Seraphina's pulse quickened as they entered the foyer, the grandeur of the space nearly overwhelming. She and Ashford moved through the crowd, exchanging pleasantries with acquaintances while keeping an eye out for Lord Harrington.
"There he is," Ashford murmured, pointing discreetly towards a group gathered near the grand staircase. Lord Harrington stood out among them, his tall frame and commanding presence unmistakable. He wore a deep navy coat that accentuated his stature, and a silver brooch gleamed at his throat, marking him as a man of means and influence.
Seraphina took a deep breath, her heart racing. "We'll have to wait for a moment to approach him. It looks like he's engaged in conversation."
They stood off to the side, the sounds of laughter and music swirling around them. The atmosphere buzzed with energy, and Seraphina felt a sense of purpose wash over her. This was the moment they had prepared for, and she would not allow fear to hold her back.
After what felt like an eternity, the group around Lord Harrington began to disperse, laughter trailing behind them. Seizing the opportunity, Seraphina and Ashford moved forward, Ashford taking the lead.
