The day arrived with a heavy sense of inevitability. As Seraphina dressed in the early morning light, pulling on her simple yet practical clothing, her heart raced in anticipation. The weight of what they were about to do pressed on her, a constant reminder that by the end of the day, their world would be irrevocably changed.
Their plan was simple in theory, but in execution, it felt like they were walking straight into the lion's den. They were going to leak the forged documents implicating Lord Kettering, stage a series of strategic distractions across the city, and release the incriminating ledger to the press—all while Montrose was left scrambling to contain the fallout. The success of their mission hinged on timing, coordination, and just the right amount of chaos.
Seraphina joined the others in the main room of the safe house. Everyone was tense but focused, each person preparing for their role in the operation. Eleanor was pouring over a map of the city, going over the locations where their distractions would take place, while John and Thom readied the communications and signals they would use to synchronize their movements. Ashford sat nearby, double-checking the forged letters they were about to plant, his face set in grim determination.
"Is everything in place?" Seraphina asked as she approached Ashford, who gave her a brief nod.
"We're ready," he replied. "The documents are perfect. Montrose will never suspect they're forgeries. Once the press gets hold of the ledger and the rumors about Kettering spread, Montrose will be too busy chasing shadows to notice anything else."
Seraphina nodded, her heart pounding. The plan was audacious, but it was their best chance. "What about the press? Thom, are we still in contact with your people?"
Thom grinned, his confidence a welcome contrast to the tension in the air. "They're ready. As soon as we give the signal, the story goes live. Montrose won't have time to suppress it."
Eleanor straightened from her map, crossing the room to stand with Seraphina and Ashford. "We'll need to be careful when we move the ledger. The streets will be watched. Montrose has informants everywhere."
Seraphina met her gaze. "We'll be careful, but we can't hesitate. We need to hit Montrose with everything at once."
The room was silent for a moment as everyone absorbed the gravity of what they were about to do. This was it—the moment they had been working toward for months. Everything hinged on what happened in the next few hours.
Ashford stood, sliding the forged letters into his jacket. "We should get going. The longer we wait, the more time Montrose has to prepare."
Seraphina glanced around the room at the faces of her comrades, people she had come to trust and care for deeply. She had seen them grow from a small, disorganized group of rebels into a force capable of taking down one of the most powerful men in the country. And now, standing on the precipice of victory, she felt a swell of pride in them.
"We do this for each other," she said quietly, her voice steady despite the storm of emotions raging inside her. "And for everyone Montrose has hurt. This is our chance to take back control."
Ashford squeezed her hand briefly, a silent reminder that she wasn't alone in this. Then, with a final nod to the others, they moved out into the city.
The streets of London were alive with the usual bustle, but beneath the surface, there was an undercurrent of tension. Seraphina could feel it in the way people moved, in the hurried whispers exchanged on street corners, and in the watchful eyes that followed them as they navigated the busy lanes. Montrose's network was vast, and they had to assume that at any moment, someone could be reporting back to him.
