◇~◇My heart nearly stopped when I saw Jonathan standing there, his eyes locked on mine. The weight of the earlier encounter sat heavy on my chest, and I could barely bring myself to speak. I wanted to apologize, to explain, but before I could even form the words, another car rolled in, its engine humming loudly, breaking the fragile silence between us.
Amelia's small hand tightened around mine and I felt the slight tremble in her grip. I glanced down at her, unsure of why she seemed so hesitant. Then the door of the sleek car swung open, and out stepped a woman draped in an elegant purple gown , after hesitating for a while Amelia ran to her yelling mummy, oh that must be Mrs. Piers i guess, Her presence commanded attention, her every movement deliberate, like someone who was used to being admired, even feared.
"Jonathan, when did you get here?" she asked, her voice smooth but laced with disinterest, as though his arrival wasn't important enough to warrant genuine curiosity.
Jonathan didn't answer, He didn't even acknowledge her, Instead his eyes were still on me, that same look of surprise and confusion from earlier lingering in his expression. My stomach twisted into a tight knot, and I could feel the heat rising to my cheeks. What was I supposed to say?
Mrs. Piers noticed finally noticed me, her gaze shifting to my face, and the moment she did, her expression changed, sharpened into something cold and judgmental. She took me in with a single glance, as if trying to place me in some predefined box. " and Who is this?" she asked, her tone cutting, her finger pointing directly at me like I was some sort of stain .
I opened my mouth, trying to find the words to explain myself, but before I could, Mrs. Forrester thankfully stepped forward. "This is Ara, the tutor for Amelia."
Relief washed over me, but it was fleeting for Mrs. Piers wasn't done with me yet. She glanced back at Jonathan, her voice dripping with suspicion "So, you two know each other?"
I froze, my heart skipping a beat. would Jonathan bring up what happened earlier? Would he tell her that we had just run into each other in the most awkward way possible? My stomach churned with anxiety as I braced for his response.
"Nice to meet you," he said, turning to me with a smile that seemed to soften the tension his voice was calm, almost disarming."I trust you're treating Amelia well, judging by her smile."
His hand extended toward me, and for a moment, I couldn't move. The unexpected kindness in his voice threw me off balance. I reached out slowly, shaking his hand, feeling the warmth of his grip.It wasn't until then that I realized I had been holding my breath.
Just as I thought things were settling down, another man approached us from behind. "Sorry, I was parking the car-" He stopped mid-sentence when he saw me, clearly taken aback. he was with Jonathan earlier.
before he could speak that he knew me, Jonathan without missing a beat, cut him off. "Let's go inside, Amelia," he said, his voice firm as he took her hand and led her into the house.
I stood there, feeling utterly stunned. What just happened? It felt like I'd been swept up into something far bigger than myself, something I had no control over. Jonathan had left without a second glance, and I was still trying to make sense of it all.
Mrs. Piers brushed past me, her lips curving into a smug little smirk that sent chills down my spine. "I'll give you a call to discuss how things will go with the lessons," she said, her tone dripping with superiority. She didn't even wait for my response before she walked away, disappearing inside the mansion.
I stood there for a moment, completely dazed, What was Jonathan doing here? And why did it feel like everything in my life was suddenly spinning out of control?
