The morning after their late-night adventure, Evan woke up with a sense of calm that he hadn't felt in a long time. The stillness of the apartment around him was comforting, almost as if the city itself was giving him space to breathe. He replayed the evening he had spent with Hanni, the way they had stood together in the empty gallery, discussing art, dreams, and life's quiet moments. There was something about her that made the world seem more manageable.
Evan spent most of the morning working on final details for the exhibition, putting together the last touches on his pieces and the arrangements for the space. His nerves were slowly turning into excitement. The culmination of months of work was almost here, and while the anxiety hadn't fully left him, there was a growing sense of anticipation. He felt ready.
Just as he was getting lost in the rhythm of his work, his phone buzzed on the table. It was a message from Sarah, his best friend from college. They had lost touch over the past couple of years, especially after she moved away to pursue her career in a different city. Seeing her name on his phone felt like an echo from a different life.
"I'm back in town for a few weeks! Coffee tomorrow?"Evan stared at the message for a moment, a smile creeping onto his face. Sarah had always been a whirlwind of energy and creativity. They had spent countless nights talking about life, love, and their respective dreams when they were younger. She had seen him through some of the toughest times, always knowing how to make him laugh when he needed it most.
"You're back?! Tomorrow's perfect! I've got so much to catch you up on.""Same! You won't believe the things I've been up to. See you at 11?"
The next day, Evan arrived at their old haunt, a tiny café that had once been their go-to spot during their college days. It was tucked away down a quiet side street, the kind of place you had to know about to find. The smell of fresh coffee filled the air as he entered, and he felt a wave of nostalgia. The café looked almost exactly as it had back then—the worn leather chairs, the art on the walls, the low hum of conversation. It felt like stepping back in time.
He barely had a moment to take it all in before Sarah burst through the door, her trademark bright smile lighting up the room. She rushed over and pulled him into a tight hug.
"Evan!" she exclaimed, pulling back to get a good look at him. "You haven't changed a bit!"
"You look amazing," Evan said, smiling. "I can't believe you're back. How long are you staying?"
Sarah shrugged, her usual carefree attitude shining through. "A few weeks, maybe more. Depends on how things go. I've been traveling so much for work, but I needed to slow down for a bit, recharge."
As they sat down and ordered their drinks, the conversation flowed easily, as if no time had passed at all. They caught up on each other's lives—Sarah telling stories of her time abroad, the people she'd met, and the projects she had been working on. Evan talked about his photography, his upcoming exhibition, and the rollercoaster it had been to prepare for it.
"So," Sarah said, after a pause, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Tell me about her."
Evan blinked. "Her?"
Sarah laughed, leaning forward. "Oh, come on. You've got that look. You're seeing someone, aren't you?"
Evan chuckled, shaking his head. "Am I that obvious?"
"Please. I know you too well. So, who is she?"
Evan told Sarah about Hanni, about their unexpected connection, and the way she had slowly become a part of his life. As he spoke, he realized how much he enjoyed talking about Hanni—about the quiet way she challenged him, the ease of their conversations, and how her presence made him feel grounded.
"She sounds incredible," Sarah said, her smile softening. "I'm happy for you, Evan. You deserve this."
Evan smiled, feeling a warmth spread through him. "Thanks. It's still new, but I feel good about it."
Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of the café door swinging open again. Evan glanced up and saw Liam walking in, scanning the room before spotting him. Liam was a fellow photographer Evan had known for years. They had crossed paths early in their careers, and though they hadn't been in touch recently, they had always had a strong professional respect for one another. Liam was known for his bold, adventurous spirit, always chasing the next challenge.
"Evan!" Liam called out, striding over to their table. "I didn't expect to run into you here."
Evan stood to greet him, exchanging a quick handshake. "Liam, it's been ages. What's been keeping you busy?"
Liam grinned, pulling up a chair and joining them. "You know me, always up to something. I've been working on a new project, actually. Something big, something I think you'd want in on."
"Oh?" Evan leaned back, intrigued. "What kind of project?"
Liam launched into an enthusiastic explanation of his latest idea—an ambitious photography series that would take them out of the city and into some of the most remote, untouched landscapes. It was wild, intense, and exactly the kind of thing Liam thrived on.
"I need someone with your eye, man," Liam said, his voice animated. "This isn't just another project. It's going to push boundaries."
Evan found himself excited by the idea. It was bold, different, and creatively invigorating. But the logistics gave him pause. It would mean leaving the city for several weeks, right in the middle of his exhibition and, more importantly, at a time when things were just starting to unfold with Hanni.
"I don't know, Liam," Evan said slowly. "It sounds amazing, but the timing—my exhibition's in a few days, and there's someone... important in my life now."
Liam gave him a knowing smile. "Life's all about timing, man. I get it. But just think about it. This kind of opportunity doesn't come around often. We're going places with this one."
Before Evan could respond, Sarah chimed in. "Liam's right, you know. These things can be hard to juggle, but if it's something you really want, you'll make it work."
Evan smiled, appreciating both of their perspectives. "I'll give it some thought."
Liam clapped him on the back, clearly satisfied. "That's all I ask. Think about it. I'll send you the details."
As the afternoon wore on, they caught up on old times, trading stories and memories. Evan felt a sense of familiarity with both Sarah and Liam, but there was also an undeniable feeling that things were shifting, both in his personal life and his career. Change was on the horizon, and he wasn't sure how he felt about it yet.
Later that evening, Evan met up with Hanni for dinner. They had chosen a quiet, hole-in-the-wall restaurant that Hanni loved. The atmosphere was relaxed, with dim lighting and soft music playing in the background. Evan had been looking forward to seeing her all day, but his conversation with Liam still weighed on his mind.
"You seem distracted," Hanni said gently, her eyes studying him across the table.
Evan sighed, deciding to be honest. "Yeah. I ran into an old friend today, Liam. He offered me a chance to work on a pretty incredible project. The only problem is, it would mean leaving the city for a few weeks."
Hanni listened quietly, her expression thoughtful. "It sounds like an amazing opportunity. How do you feel about it?"
"I'm excited," Evan admitted. "But I'm also torn. I don't want to mess up the momentum we have... between us."
Hanni smiled, her gaze soft. "Evan, you don't have to worry about that. If this is something you want to do, I'll support you. I want you to follow your passion. We'll figure it out when you get back."
Her words made Evan feel lighter, like the weight of the decision wasn't as heavy as he had imagined. "You mean that?"
"Of course I do," Hanni said, her smile widening. "Besides, you're not getting rid of me that easily."
Evan chuckled, reaching for her hand across the table. "You're pretty amazing, you know that?"
"I've been told," Hanni teased. "But I expect another late-night adventure when you get back."
"Deal."
