Ryota hated math.

If there was ever a more pointless, mind-numbing subject in existence, he couldn't name it. He was already 20 minutes into the session, and his brain was fried, the numbers on the page starting to blur together.

Rei, meanwhile, sat across from him, calm as ever. She didn't even seem fazed by his obvious struggle, like she was used to it by now. She pointed to a problem on the page. —"Try this one again. You're adding when you should subtract."

—"Easy for you to say." Ryota grumbled, flipping the pencil in his hand like a mini baton. "Math's basically your second language."

Rei raised an eyebrow but didn't argue. Instead, she leaned in closer to see what he was working on. Too close, more than intended probably.

Ryota froze.

He could feel the faint brush of her hair as she hovered next to him, so close he could smell the soft scent of whatever shampoo she used. It was something light and clean, nothing too strong, but it still threw him off. His grip on the pencil tightened.

—"Here." Rei pointed again, her voice soft as usual, oblivious to the fact that Ryota was sitting there like a statue. —"This part. If you move this number here—"

Ryota's mind wasn't even on the problem anymore. He tried to focus—tried so hard—but his gaze kept flickering to Rei's face, the way her expression was completely neutral, completely unfazed, like they were just two normal people sitting together

She didn't even notice how close they were. Or maybe she did, and it just didn't bother her the way it bothered him.

He cleared his throat, leaning back slightly to put some distance between them. —"Yeah, yeah, I got it."

Rei didn't seem to notice his subtle retreat. She sat back, giving him space again, and watched as he half-heartedly worked through the problem. The silence between them wasn't awkward this time. In fact, it almost felt... normal.

After a few minutes, Ryota finally scribbled something down and slid the paper towards her. —"There."

Rei scanned the answer, her face unreadable, and after a long pause, she nodded.

—"Hm, you even added the coordinates in the graph. It's correct."

Ryota exhaled, feeling a weird surge of relief. —"About time."As he leaned back in his chair, stretching his arms behind his head, Rei pulled out a small notebook and flipped through it, clearly planning out their next task. Ryota's gaze drifted toward her again, and before he could stop himself, the words slipped out.

—"You always this quiet?"

Rei looked up from her notes, surprised by the question. —"What do you mean?"

—"I mean, you don't talk much. You ever... I don't know, just get tired of being so quiet?" he said while shrugging

Rei blinked, clearly caught off guard by the question. She tilted her head slightly, considering his words.—"I don't mind being quiet," she said after a moment, "I like it."

—"Huh. Weird."

Rei's gaze flicked toward him, her eyes narrowing slightly. —"And you like being loud?"

—"I'm not loud," Ryota shot back immediately, but his smirk gave him away, "I'm just... expressive."

Rei's lips twitched, but she quickly hid it behind her notebook. —"Expressive," she echoed quietly, her tone deadpan.

Ryota watched her for a second, noticing the subtle movement of her fingers on the paper. —"You smiled just now," he said, almost without thinking.

Rei blinked, looking up at him again. —"No I didn't."

—"You almost did."

Rei didn't respond, her face carefully neutral again, but Ryota could see the faintest hint of color on her cheeks.

He grinned, leaning in a little. —"Don't worry. I won't tell anyone you're secretly human."

Rei gave him a blank look, but there was something different about it this time, something that made Ryota's pulse quicken just a bit. She was looking at him—not like he was some delinquent who couldn't solve a math problem, but like he was someone... different. Someone she was seeing.

And that unsettled him more than anything else.
