Ryota flipped the page of his notebook, tapping the end of his pencil against the paper. The library was unusually quiet for the late afternoon, the only sound being the faint rustle of pages turning and the occasional soft click of the librarian's keyboard.

He stole a glance at Rei across the table, who was focused on a thick textbook, her face as neutral as ever. She had this whole "I'm too good for emotions" vibe, but he knew better by now. After all, he had seen that tiny crack in her armor during the festival, even if it was just for a second.

He cleared his throat. —"Hey... what's with all the extra homework lately? They're seriously trying to kill us before finals."

Rei didn't look up from her book, but she did respond. —"It's preparation. The more we practice now, the less stressful it'll be later."

Ryota groaned. —"Yeah, I bet. You probably have everything memorized already."

Rei finally raised her eyes to meet his —"Not everything," she replied simply. There was no trace of arrogance, just a factual statement.

He leaned back in his chair, arms crossed, studying her for a moment. —"You're... kinda annoying, you know that?"

Rei blinked, unfazed. —"I've been told, don't bother."

There was no venom in her voice, though. If anything, Ryota caught the faintest hint of amusement behind her calm demeanor. It was moments like this that threw him off balance. He couldn't quite pin her down, and it bugged him.

He leaned forward again, lowering his voice, pretending to be serious. —"But you're still gonna help me ace this, right?"

Rei sighed, but there was the tiniest of smiles tugging at the corner of her mouth. —"That's what I'm here for, isn't it?"
