Ophelia opened her eyes to find herself in her room. Liril entered with a warm smile.
“Good morning, milady,” Liril said, approaching Ophelia. “How are you feeling today?”
Ophelia replied “I’m fine, thank you, Liril.”
Liril asked “Shall I assist you in freshening up?”
Ophelia nodded, grateful for Liril’s attentive nature.
Ophelia's thoughts drifted to the previous day's events.
“Ryker?” Ophelia asked, her voice weak.
Liril smiled. “I’ll fetch him, milady.”
Ryker entered, concern etched on his face. “Ophie, you woke up. How are you feeling now? Are you alright?”
“I’m okay now,” Ophelia replied, “but… what happened?”
Ryker’s expression turned cautious. “You fainted yesterday. I carried you to your room. Did… did I scare you? I’m sorry, Ophie. I went too far.”
Ophelia’s hands brushed against Ryker’s. “No, Ryker, don’t blame yourself. It wasn’t because of you. I felt that sharp pain again, and then… I don’t remember anything.”
Ryker’s brow furrowed. “What? I think we should get you checked up.”
Ophelia’s eyes darted away. “Let’s leave it here. What about you? How’s your arm?”
Ryker’s smile was gentle. “Better now. Do you… still remember about yesterday?”
Ophelia’s cheeks flushed. “Wh-what? I don’t remember… and I don’t know what you’re saying.”
Ryker teased, his voice low. “Really?”
A knock at the door interrupted them. Liril entered, bowing. “Queen Elara called for Prince Ryker and Milady.”
Ryker nodded. “Okay, you can go now.”
Ophelia’s gaze met Ryker’s. “Did she know what happened yesterday?”
Ryker’s voice was barely audible. “No, and I think we shouldn’t tell anyone.”
Ophelia nodded.
Queen Elara’s voice echoed from the dining hall. “Where were you? Breakfast is ready. Let’s have it, and then you have to go.”
Ophelia’s eyes locked onto Ryker’s, seeking answers.
Ryker’s expression remained neutral. “But… where?”
Queen Elara replied, “There’s a celebration in the nearby town. I think you should go… take Lyra and Ophelia with you.”
Lyra hesitated, “But it’s not safe to travel right now.”
Ryker’s resolute voice countered, “We’ll go. We can’t always hide and live in fear. We have to face it one day anyway.”
Lyra nodded, “Ok, if you say so.”
After breakfast, the trio set off toward the town. Ryker pointed out vibrant wildflowers, sparkling streams, and majestic birds soaring overhead, delighting Ophelia with the simple wonders of the world. As they entered the town, warm smiles and open arms welcomed them.
The townspeople gifted them traditional attire for the celebration. Ryker, Ophelia, and Lyra changed, transforming into vibrant versions of themselves. The music began, and they lost themselves in laughter and dance. Ryker’s hand found Ophelia’s, guiding her through swirling crowds.
Under the guise of exploring, Ryker led Ophelia to a secluded, enchanting glade. “Ryker?” she whispered, eyes wide with curiosity.
“Shh…” He smiled, eyes locked on hers.
“What is this place? It’s so beautiful,” Ophelia breathed.
“Not more than you,” Ryker replied, his voice barely above a whisper. Ophelia’s cheeks flushed.Meanwhile Lyra's eyes narrowed as she realized Ryker and Ophelia were nowhere to be found. She excused herself from the gathering, intent on locating them. As she turned a corner, a hooded figure yanked her into the shadows.
The figure's grip tightened, and Lyra's heart skipped a beat. But as she gazed up at the obscured face, recognition dawned.
"What are you doing here?" Lyra demanded, trying to wriggle free.
The figure's voice dripped with malice. "And what about you? Are you truly willing to let him go? Don't you desire him still?"
Lyra's finger shot out, accusing. "You...this is none of your business."
The figure's gaze never wavered. "Perhaps not, but she is my business. If you won't act, I will."
Lyra's eyes flashed. "Shut up! I've changed, and I won't repeat my mistakes. Don't even think of interfering. You didn't listen last time and nearly got caught by the river. What if Ophelia saw you? Or Ryker? He'd never let you go." Her voice dropped to a menacing whisper. "I won't warn you again. Leave. Now."
The figure clenched his jaw. "But they didn't... and that's it. I can't wait anymore. I want her. I want her badly. Last time she escaped me. She's like a drug to me, and I'm craving her. I can't live like this. I'll take her and satisfy my desire today."
Lyra's eyes narrowed. "Dare you do anything, and you'll be dead. Go now. Get lost."
The person's gaze lingered, then he nodded. "Okay, I'll leave now, but if you don't do anything soon... I will." With a menacing glance, he turned and left, disappearing into the crowd.
“Why did you bring me here?” Ophelia asked, her voice laced with wonder.
“To finish what we left unfinished,” Ryker’s eyes burned with intensity. He leaned in, his lips inches from hers.
“Ryker, what are you doing?” Ophelia’s voice trembled.
Closer, his warm breath danced across her skin. “I love you,” he whispered in her ear. A shiver coursed through her.
“Ryker, I…”
“Shh, Ophie. Let me speak today. The moment I saw you, I fell for you. I wanted to protect you, to shield you from harm, to wipe away every tear. I hated those who tried to hurt you.” His voice poured out, filling the silence. “You light up my world in ways I never thought possible. Your smile is my sunrise, your laughter my solace.”
Ophelia’s eyes brimmed with tears.
“You don’t need to answer me,” Ryker continued. “I know it’s hard after everything that’s happened. But I feel it, Ophie. And you admitted yesterday that you like me. That’s enough for me.”
Ophelia’s arms wrapped tightly around him.
“Thank you, Ryker. Thanks for everything.”
Ryker’s embrace enveloped her.
“We’ll stay here tonight and leave tomorrow.”
In the stillness, surrounded by nature’s beauty, they stood entwined, the promise of a new beginning hanging in the air.
