Ophelia opened her eyes, her vision blurry. She turned her head, and Ryker’s face came into focus. He sat on the shore, panting, his clothes drenched and dripping with water.

She coughed weakly, her voice barely audible. Ryker’s eyes snapped toward her, and he stood up.

“Ophelia?” Ryker’s voice was gentle as he approached her. He cupped her face, his hands warm and gentle. “Are you okay?”

Ophelia nodded, still dizzy.

Just then, Lyra appeared. “I found a place for refuge. Let’s get you both out of the cold.”

Ryker scooped Ophelia up in his arms, carrying her to a small cottage nestled among the trees.

Inside, Ryker guided Ophelia to a chair, helping her sit down. "Ophie, are you okay?" Lyra asked, concern etched on her face.

Ophelia nodded again, still trying to clear her foggy mind.

Lyra handed them towels and dry clothes. "Change into these. You're both soaked to the bone."

With Lyra's assistance, Ophelia stumbled into a small bedroom, grateful for the warmth and quiet. She changed into the dry clothes, feeling a little better.

When they finished, Lyra called out, “Come, let’s eat.”

As they finished dinner, Ryker stood up. “You both need rest. Today was brutal. Let’s get some sleep.”

Lyra nodded.

Ryker helped Ophelia to her bedroom door. “Get some rest, Ophelia.”

Ophelia nodded, stepping inside. She felt uneasy, her mind reeling from the day’s events.

Ryker’s gentle voice carried through the door. “I’ll be right outside if you need me.”

Ophelia’s heart fluttered at his words.

The next morning, Ryker knocked at Ophelia’s door, but there was no response. He knocked again, and still, there was no answer. Concerned, he pushed open the door and entered her room, only to find it empty.

Ryker’s search turned frantic as he scoured every corner of the house. That’s when Lyra saw him, alarm etched on her face.

“What happened?” Lyra asked.

“Ophelia’s missing,” Ryker replied, his voice firm.

Lyra’s expression softened. “She should be nearby. The danger’s over, Ryker.”

Ryker’s restlessness wouldn’t subside. “By any chance…what if someone took her?” He turned to Lyra. “Help me find her.”

Lyra nodded, and they split up to search.

Ryker rushed toward the Nightfall River’s shore, scanning the horizon for Ophelia. Relief washed over him as he spotted her sitting alone, staring blankly into the distance.
“Ophelia!” Ryker exclaimed. He dropped beside her, grasping her hand. “What are you doing here? I was worried sick.

Ophelia’s gaze didn’t waver from the river. “I…don’t know.”
Ryker's eyes searched hers, seeking answers, his heart aching with concern. "You just vanished. You scared me.. I thought…I thought something happened to you. I thought the danger was over, but…what if it’s not? What if someone took you?  What's going on, Ophelia? What's haunting you?"

Ophelia's shoulders barely shrugged, her voice fragile. "I don't know."

Ryker's grip on her hand tightened, his worry deepening. He enveloped her in a gentle embrace, holding her close. "I'm here for you, Ophelia. Always. You're safe now."
Ophelia’s eyes finally met Ryker’s, a hint of uncertainty in them. “Am I?” she whispered.

“With me, always.” Ryker’s grip on her hand tightened.
But Ophelia’s distant expression unsettled him.

Lyra arrived at Nightfall River, searching for Ophelia. She spotted Ryker sitting with Ophelia, concern etched on his face.
She approached them, her eyes scanning the intimate scene. “Ophelia, what are you doing here? We were worried sick about you.”
Ophelia’s head bowed, her apology barely audible. “I’m sorry.”

Ryker’s expression softened. “It’s okay, Ophie. Let me get you something to eat.” He rose and headed towards the cottage.
In the cottage, Lyra whispered, "Ryker, is everything alright?"

Ryker nodded reassuringly. "Yeah, she's just shaken up. Needs some care."

Lyra whispered to Ryker, "You're better at this. Go talk to her, she's more comfortable with you."

Ryker nodded and returned with food. Ophelia thanked him, their fingers touching.

Lyra watched, sensing the connection between Ophelia and Ryker.

As they shared a quiet moment, Ophelia's thoughts drifted to the mysterious bond she shared with The Stranger.

"Why do I feel like I've known him before?" she wondered.

Ophelia's gaze drifted into the distance, lost in thought.
