As they journeyed deeper into the forest, Ophelia's curiosity grew. "Ryker, where are we headed? What's the purpose of this journey?" she asked, her eyes searching for answers.
Before Ryker could respond, their horse halted abruptly, gazing out at the tranquil river ahead.
"Ophie, once we cross this river, I'll answer all your questions," Ryker promised, his eyes locked on the water.
Ophelia's gaze followed his. "This doesn't seem like an ordinary river," she said, sensing an undercurrent of unease.
Lyra nodded gravely. "You're right, Ophie. It’s the Shadowfall River. Though small, this river hides many secrets. Nobody knows what lies within its depths, but those who tried to explore its darkest depths vanished."
Ophelia's brow furrowed. "What do you mean?"
Lyra's expression turned solemn. "Only"
"Only?" Ophelia repeated, seeking clarification.
Lyra's pause hung in the air before she continued, "Only those connected to this river can cross it. Those who tried to unfold its secrets, to uncover the truth, vanished. Never to be seen again."
Ophelia's doubts resurfaced. "But I'm not connected to this river. I've never been here before. How can I—"
Ryker's gentle interruption calmed her fears. "That's not entirely true, Ophie. You can cross."
Ophelia's protest was cut short by Lyra's urgency. "No more questions, Ophie. Time is running out. We must cross before darkness. Those wolves' power grows at night, and they'll hunt us down."
Ryker's hands enveloped Ophelia's, his eyes warm with reassurance. "I know you don't know me, and it's hard for you to trust me. But I promised you answers. Trust your instincts, Ophie. Trust me."
With Ryker's guidance, Ophelia steeled herself for the unknown.
“Okay,” Ophelia agreed, “but how are we going to cross it?”
Ryker drew his sword, its edge glinting as he touched it to the river’s surface. A narrow, fragile bridge-like path emerged from the waters.
“Let’s go, Ophie,” Ryker said, offering his hand.
“That’s what you meant by connected to this river?” Ophelia asked, awed.
“Come, Ophie, be careful,” Ryker cautioned, his grip reassuring.
Lyra’s eyes narrowed, a flicker of jealousy crossing her face. “Let me go ahead, check for dangers,” she suggested.
Ryker nodded, his gaze lingering on Ophelia.
Lyra led the way, followed by Ophelia and Ryker, who shielded her from potential harm.
As they traversed the precarious bridge, Ophelia felt an unseen force grasp her ankle, pulling her toward the dark waters. She let out a terrified cry, “Ahh!”
Ryker’s swift reflexes saved her from falling. “Ophelia!” Ryker and Lyra exclaimed in unison, panic etched on their faces.
Ryker steadied Ophelia, his hands wrapping around her waist.
“You have to be careful,” Lyra warned. “Didn’t I tell you, those who tried to explore this river’s depths disappeared?”
Ophelia struggled to explain, “But I-I… I felt—”
Ryker’s soothing touch came as he placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. “Ophie, don’t be scared. I’m here.”
Lyra’s gaze fell, her expression tinged with sadness.
Ryker’s eyes locked onto Ophelia’s, his voice low and reassuring. “I’ve got you.” He swept Ophelia into his arms, cradling her close as if she were the most precious thing in the world.
Lyra’s eyes lingered on the tender moment, a faint sorrow shadowing her face.
As Ryker carried Ophelia across Shadowfall River, the water’s dark energy seemed to swirl around them. Lyra led the way, her senses alert for any signs of danger.
Once they reached the other side, Ryker gently set Ophelia down. “We’re not out of danger yet,” he warned. “The forest’s heart remains hidden. We must press on.”
Ophelia nodded, determination etched on her face.
Suddenly, a chilling howl pierced the air. “The Shadowborn pack,” Lyra whispered, her eyes scanning the surroundings. “They’ve found our trail.”
Ryker drew his sword. “We need to move, now.”
As they hastened through the forest, the howls grew louder. Ophelia’s heart pounded. “What are the Shadowborn?” she asked.
Lyra’s voice was grim. “Creatures born from darkness, forged to serve the forest’s darkest forces.”
“Are they the ones we encountered in that forest?” Ophelia asked, her eyes wide with concern.
“All these creatures are Shadowhound’s,” Lyra explained. “It’s said he created them. Shadowborn are the most powerful among them…and we can't fight them; we have to run for our lives…. They won’t stop until they’ve claimed you."
Ryker’s gaze locked onto Ophelia’s. “I won’t let that happen.”
“Don’t worry,” Lyra reassured Ophelia, “we’ll keep you safe.”
“Yes, Ophie,” Ryker reassured. “We’re very close to our destination. We can’t lose hope. We have to escape this forest.”
Ophelia’s curiosity persisted. “But why is everything here connected to Shadows?”
Ryker’s gaze turned solemn. “Because… this forest belongs to Shadows… and…”
“And?” Ophelia pressed.
Just then, a tree branch snapped, hurtling toward Ryker. Ophelia swiftly pushed him away, falling onto him. Ryker’s arms enveloped her, holding her close as they landed on the forest floor.
For a fleeting moment, the danger surrounding them melted away. Ophelia’s face was inches from Ryker’s. Ryker’s warm breath caressed her skin, sending shivers down her spine.
“Ryker?” Ophelia whispered, her voice barely audible.
Ryker’s eyes locked onto hers, filled with concern and something more. His fingers gently brushed a strand of hair from her face.
Suddenly, Lyra’s urgent voice broke the spell. “Ryker, Ryker, are you okay?”
As they stood, Ryker’s eyes locked onto Ophelia’s. “Yes, I’m fine,” he replied.
Lyra’s expression faltered.
“Are you okay, Ophie?” Ryker asked.
Ophelia nodded.
The howls grew louder.
“We have to go now,” Ryker urged, holding Ophelia’s hands.
“C’mon, Ophie,” Ryker said, running with her.
“We need to distract them,” Lyra suggested.
Ryker halted abruptly. “Ophie, go with Lyra. I’ll follow. I have a plan.”
“But Ryker—”
“Don’t worry about me,” Ryker interrupted. “Among us three, only you don’t know how to fight or have powers. So do as I say. Lyra, please take her.”
Lyra nodded. “Come, Ophie. We don’t have time to think. We have to trust him.”
Ophelia nodded, following Lyra as Ryker remained behind.
