Lexi stood frozen in the doorway of her uncle's study, the scent of old leather and cigar smoke thick in the air. Her uncle's voice, normally booming with laughter, was sharp, edged with something that sounded like...fear? "...can't let her find out. It has to be done before the wedding."
A chill snaked down Lexi's spine. Who were they talking about? And what had to be done? Was she in danger? Should she confront her uncle? She backed away, her shoes barely whispering against the floor, her heart pounding against her ribs. Was this about the merger? Or was it something more sinister... something connected to Reg?"Lexi, my dear," Uncle Edward began, his voice smooth as silk, "you seem...distracted. Is everything alright with Reginald?"
"He's...intense," Lexi admitted, picking at a loose thread on her skirt.
Uncle Edward chuckled, a low, rumbling sound. "Intense? Well, he does have a lot to prove. The Montgomery's always have." He paused, his eyes gleaming with an unreadable emotion. "This merger is crucial for both our families, Lexi. We can't afford any...complications."
Lexi felt a shiver crawl down her spine. "Complications?"
"Indeed," her uncle said, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "The Montgomery's have a long memory, Lexi. They don't take kindly to...disappointments." He leaned closer, his gaze piercing. "Are you sure you're not overthinking things? Perhaps a little pre-wedding jitters?"
Lexi met his gaze, her own resolve hardening. "Maybe," she said, her voice steady. "But I need to be sure, Uncle. For both our sakes." Just be careful, Lexi. Sometimes the truth is more dangerous than we realize.
