The first day of school buzzed with activity as children filed into their classrooms, excited chatter echoing through the halls.
Tobias walked nervously through the building, his steps slow and uncertain as he followed Aria down the crowded hallway. Her energy was magnetic, and he couldn’t help but feel comforted by her presence, even though he was still wary of what lay ahead.
Aria glanced back at him with a grin. “You’ll do great, I promise,” she reassured him. “Everyone’s going to love you.”
Tobias gave her a small nod, but his heart still pounded in his chest. Walking into a classroom full of strangers was always the hardest part. When they reached his classroom door, Aria stopped and turned to him.
“This is it!” she announced, gesturing toward the door with a wide smile. “Don’t worry. If anyone gives you a hard time, I’ll come to save you.” She winked playfully. Aria noticed that Tobias's ear turned crimson red once again.
“Thanks,” Tobias mumbled, feeling a rush of warmth again in this heart, the same feeling that had emerged at the bus stop. There was something about her kindness that made him believe maybe, just maybe, things would turn out okay.
Before he could enter, Aria waved at him one last time. “See you at recess, okay?” she called before disappearing down the hall toward her own class.
Tobias watched her go, feeling oddly reassured. With a deep breath, he pushed the door open and stepped into the room.
The classroom was already filled with students, their voices a constant hum of excitement. Tobias’ eyes darted around nervously, looking for an empty seat. The teacher, Ms. Willows, a kind-looking woman with a gentle smile, stood at the front, greeting students as they entered.
“Good morning!” she said brightly as Tobias hesitated by the door. “You must be Tobias, our new student. Welcome!”
Tobias nodded awkwardly, the weight of everyone’s gaze making him feel small. His fingers twitched nervously at his sides, but he managed to mutter, “Good morning.”
Ms. Willows gestured toward an empty seat near the middle. “You can take a seat right there, Tobias. We’re just about to start.”
He quickly shuffled to his desk, his eyes lowered as he avoided making too much eye contact with his classmates. The moment he sat down, the nervousness he felt earlier began to creep back in.
But before he could dwell on it, a familiar voice called out from behind him.
“Toby?” the boy next to him whispered. Tobias turned, his eyes widening in surprise. Jaxon Olsen, his neighbor and first friend in the new neighborhood, grinned at him from the seat beside him. With his curly black hair and bright smile, Jaxon was the one person Tobias felt completely at ease with since moving.
“You’re in this class too?” Tobias asked, his voice soft but filled with relief.
“Yeah! I didn’t know we’d be in the same class. This is going to be awesome!” Jaxon replied, his grin wide. “Don’t worry, you’ve got me. We’re in this together.”
Tobias couldn’t help but smile, his earlier anxiety already fading. Jaxon’s presence made the classroom feel far less intimidating, like the one piece of home he could hold onto in this new environment.

Later, as the bell rang for recess, Tobias gathered his things and made his way outside with Jaxon by his side. The playground was a chaotic swirl of laughter, running feet, and excited voices. Tobias scanned the crowd, looking for Aria. He spotted her near the swings, chatting with a girl and a boy. The sight of her put him at ease again.
When she saw him, her face lit up, and she waved him and Jaxon over. “Tobias! Jaxon! Over here!” she called, her voice cutting through the noise.
Tobias smiled, making his way toward her with Jaxon close behind. The other two kids turned to look at them, their expressions curious but friendly.
“This is Tobias,” Aria introduced him with a big smile. “He’s new, but he’s super nice and cool. And he likes space stuff!”
Tobias flushed at the attention but smiled shyly as the group greeted him. A girl with blone hair and blue eyes named Mia asked “Space? Like, planets and aliens?”
“Yeah,” Tobias mumbled, his voice a little quiet. “I like learning about stars and planets.”
“That’s so cool!” the girl said, eyes wide with interest. “I’m Mia, Aria's best friend. Maybe we can pretend to be astronauts together.”
Aria giggled. “Told you everyone’s nice,” she said to Tobias nudging him lightly. She noticed that his ear had starting to turn red again. “We like playing space stuff too. I draw the planets, and Jaxon makes up the spaceship names. Aria controls the spaceship and kyle controls the food items."
“I make the best spaceship names,” Jaxon added proudly, puffing out his chest. “We had one called Blaster X last time. It was super fast.”
Tobias couldn’t help but smile at that. “Blaster X sounds awesome,” he said, his shyness starting to fade.
“Hey, we can come up with new names today,” Aria suggested excitedly. “Wanna play spaceship now?”
Tobias looked at both Aria and Jaxon, feeling a surge of warmth. “Yeah. That sounds fun.”
Jaxon beamed. “You can be the captain this time, Toby.”
Tobias blinked in surprise. “Me? Captain?”
“Yup! You’re new, so you get to pick what planet we visit too,” Aria declared with a wide grin.
Tobias smiled shyly, his nerves melting away. “Okay…how about we visit Saturn?”
“Saturn it is!” Jaxon shouted, pumping his fist in the air.
As the bell rang and they all headed back to class, Tobias couldn’t stop smiling. Maybe this new place wasn’t so bad after all. He had new friends, and they made everything feel easier.
Maybe today was the start of something better than he could have imagine.
