The next day, Dr. Mendez summoned us to the common room, the atmosphere crackling with anticipation. I had informed Luan, Safestia, and Kyewlli of my deal, and they were both excited and wary of what lay ahead.
"Elmara," Dr. Mendez began, addressing us as a group. "You're all aware of the circumstances surrounding your confinement here. Today marks a new chapter for you."
"What does that mean?" Safestia asked, her voice steady yet laced with concern.
"It means you're free to leave," he announced, his expression inscrutable. "But this freedom comes with conditions."
"Conditions?" Luan echoed, his brow furrowed.
Dr. Mendez's eyes narrowed slightly. "You will remain under my observation for a period of time. I need to ensure you can integrate back into society. After that, you will return to me when the time comes, as per our agreement."
Kyelli leaned back, a smirk creeping onto his face. "Sounds like a sweet deal, doesn't it?"
"Enough," I snapped, my focus solely on Dr. Mendez. "What's the catch?"
"No catch, per se. Just understand that you are no longer under the ward's direct supervision, but you are still my subjects. I expect updates on your progress in adapting to the outside world. You will remain connected to me, even in freedom."
A wave of uncertainty washed over my companions, but I felt a surge of confidence. "Fine. We accept."
Dr. Mendez smiled, and in that moment, I realized I had made a calculated gamble. I could maneuver the world outside while still holding the reins of my fate.
The first breath of fresh air hit me as we exited the ward, a liberating rush that felt both exhilarating and daunting. We stood in the parking lot, the world spread out before us, vibrant and alive. I had a new lease on life, yet the dark undercurrents of my past still lingered.
"Where do we go from here?" Luan asked, his voice filled with trepidation.
I glanced at my companions, their expressions a mix of excitement and uncertainty. "We regroup and lay low. I have plans—big plans."
"What kind of plans?" Safestia asked, her eyes narrowed, skepticism etched on her face.
I smiled, a secretive expression that held the promise of something grand. "Plans that will elevate us beyond this world of mediocrity. I've been thinking about how we can harness our abilities. Together, we can create something incredible."
