The birds were chirping, and the leaves and branches were rustling together, making a relaxing sound. Even though I was already awake, the nature noises made me want to sink back into my mattress. It had rained last night, so I opened the window because I love the smell of fresh air in the morning and the damp soil. Sunbeams were filtering through the tall trees, making me close my eyes and take a deep breath.
"Baby! The letter has arrived! Come read it!" My mom called out. I jumped at the word "letter," my heart racing with nerves about my application to Lyrenvale. I thought I did okay on the tests, but without any real training, I wouldn't be surprised if I didn't get in. Still, I figured it was worth a shot.
I ran to the living room, where my mom was seated on our old, dark blue couch. We had sunk into it over the years because the springs were worn out from all the use.
She looked at me with radiant eyes, handing me the letter excitedly. "Hurry up! Why are you such a snail? Open it! It looks like I'm more excited than you are!" I took the letter from her hands and sat down, slowing my breaths while my heart pounded in my chest. There was a feeling I didn't get in, but maybe... just maybe...
"I GOT IN! MOM, I GOT INTO LYRENVALE ACADEMY!" I screamed as she squealed in delight. We jumped on the couch, hugging each other, my knees trembling from the shock.
"You are going to be the best mage to ever exist! Oh, I'm so proud of you, honey!" She hugged me tightly. "When will you start packing? It's only in two months!"
"Mom, calm down! I love your enthusiasm, but it's too soon! I need to go for a walk past the veil; I need to calm my nerves," I said softly. As I stood up, I didn't care that I was still in my pajamas; no one went to that place anyway—it was just me and nature. I quickly redid my ponytail, which had gotten messy while I slept.
Walking past the veil always felt strange to me. It felt like a wave of energy washed over me, which, in a way, it did, and I felt as if I had been born anew. I formed a ball of light, a soft yellow and shiny, just to check if my powers had returned after walking through the magical barrier that allowed me to use them.
Then I let the ball evaporate into tiny sparkles, not wanting to do anything more with it.
When I was young, I never understood how to use my powers. In fact, I didn't even know I had them since I always lived outside the veil. Most people did, as many believed that powers were problematic and could cause wars and power imbalances. The strongest would exploit the weak, and nobody wanted that, which is why the veil exists. Outside of it, any kind of power was unusable, and the area was quite small compared to the non-magical lands. I wasn't supposed to use my powers either, as the veil itself was fairly large; it had breaches, meaning anyone could pass through. When I was seven, I accidentally walked through a breach and started playing there like an innocent child. I found a small cave and wanted to see what was inside, but it was dark. When I thought of light, a faint but noticeable glow began to emanate from my hands. I was terrified but fascinated nonetheless; my mom had been following me the whole time from a distance. "Looks like you found your powers. Let's go, baby; you've played enough for today," I remember her saying.
After that, I kept asking my mom what the light was that appeared in my hands. At first, she wouldn't tell me because powers were dangerous to her, but eventually, she sat down with me and explained.
"The light you saw forming on your hands was your magical powers. They're really weak now, but they can grow." I tried to make the light appear again, closing my eyes in concentration.
My mom chuckled and continued explaining. "Darling, you can't use it here! We are outside the veil."
"Mommy, is the veil that light purple barrier?" I asked.
"Yes, honey, that's exactly what the veil is. Under normal circumstances, you shouldn't be able to get in, but it seems like you found a breach and entered the veil. That's the only place where you can use your powers. We should report it."
"No, Mommy! I want to keep using my powers! Please, Mommy!" I pleaded in a high-pitched voice, amazed by my abilities. I wanted to explore them, to train, and see where they could take me.
She sighed. "Okay, I won't report it, but be careful! If anyone sees you there and realizes you are from the outside, you might get into trouble!"
"Yes! Thank you, Mommy!" I said with a big smile while hugging her tightly.
It was a hassle for me even to be considered for the tests. I had broken the veil once after they fixed it, and of course, I was from the outside. I wasn't even registered as a magic user. But it was all worth it. I looked around the land inside the veil. I didn't need to go through the breach because of an amulet they gave me; the other students at Lyrenvale had them for field trips and just to get away from the veil. The outside world was much better, much bigger, and definitely more interesting, with its bustling cities, malls, and more.
Inside the veil was so serene; it was truly where I belonged. I couldn't wait to attend Lyrenvale; it was going to be such an incredible experience.
I was so excited.
