Today is the day! I'm so nervous, but at the same time, excitement is coursing through me like electricity. I've heard countless things about Lyrenvale Academy, and I hope all the whispers of its excellence are true. These next three years are going to be challenging, but I know they'll be worth it."Mom, can you braid my hair now? It's getting late!" I called out, my voice edged with urgency. In the kitchen, I could hear her moving around, preparing breakfast for us. The sweet smell of waffles drifted into the room, warm and comforting, mingling with the stronger scent of coffee, which I knew was for her—coffee's bitterness never sat well with me. I took a deep breath, savoring the morning, and then busied myself watering my plants and opening the window, letting the fresh, cool air fill the room.
"Sweetie, the waffles are done! While they're cooling down, I'll braid your hair. Do you want it my way or the regular one?" she asked, stepping into the room.
I grinned. "If I'm asking you, maybe it's because I want it your way."
She chuckled, raising an eyebrow playfully. "I don't know, maybe you just want to be babied one last time before you're off for the next three months."
"Hurry up, Mom. I'm getting nervous here. The Academy even sent a car to pick me up!" I shifted from foot to foot, glancing at the clock.
"How thoughtful of them. I half-expected they'd make the outsider walk!" she teased.
"What? Really?" I said, eyes widening. Then, I tried to reassure her, softening my tone. "Besides, I'm not exactly an outsider. I have powers too, just like them, most people born outside the veil gave them up, and we only live five minutes away. I'm basically one of them."
She sighed, her fingers gentle yet firm as they weaved my hair into a braid. "I know, darling. It's just... I worry you won't fit in as well as you think. Even if we're close, we still have 'outsider' habits—styles, beliefs... all these little things."
"Mom, I'm 18. I'm a grown woman now. I'll be fine. And if anyone messes with me, I'll just blind them!" I said with a laugh, hoping to lighten her worries. Inside, though, I could feel a knot of nerves growing tighter. I was optimistic, but part of me shared her fear.
She finished the braid, letting it fall down to my lower back, and smoothed a few loose strands. "You'll always be my baby," she murmured, kissing the back of my head. The morning sunlight streamed through the window, catching on my very light blond hair, making it glow. I caught my reflection and had to admit, I looked good—confident, ready.
"I look fairly nice today, I must confess," I said, trying to mimic a posh accent. My mom burst out laughing.
"I've got magical hands, you know that! But you're getting late, Alliya. Let's eat!"
I took a deep breath, stood up, and smoothed my skirt. Nervous energy made my hands shake as I followed the delicious aroma of waffles into the kitchen, while the smell of coffee, as always, made me wrinkle my nose.
