The following morning dawned with a crispness in the air, the kind that heralded change. Brittany felt it deep in her bones as she prepared breakfast in Cian’s family kitchen. The smell of bacon sizzling on the stove mixed with the sound of laughter and chatter from the living room, where Cian’s siblings were already bustling about.

“Hey, do you want scrambled eggs or sunny-side up?” Brittany called out to Cian, who was still getting ready in the bedroom.

“Surprise me!” Cian replied, his voice echoing back, light and playful.

Brittany smiled to herself, feeling a warmth wash over her. She felt grateful for the fleeting moments of joy amidst the clouds that still loomed over them. She was determined to savor the small things, to hold onto every smile and every shared laugh.

When Cian finally joined her, his hair tousled and a sleepy smile on his face, Brittany couldn’t help but tease him. “You look like you just rolled out of bed—oh wait, you did!”

“Very funny,” he chuckled, leaning over to plant a kiss on her cheek before grabbing a plate.

After breakfast, they all gathered in the living room to plan out the day. Cian’s family had decided to go out for a picnic at the park, hoping to enjoy the sunshine and take their minds off the upcoming appointments.

“I call dibs on the sandwiches!” Cian’s brother, Fionn, shouted, earning groans and laughter from the others.

Brittany felt a sense of ease as they made preparations, the energy in the room vibrant and full of life. But in the back of her mind, the looming appointments still weighed heavily on her heart.
