The news spread faster than they'd anticipated.
The morning after Tim and Lucy decided to go public with their marriage, they both walked into the bullpen, side by side. Lucy's fingers brushed against Tim's hand, a small gesture that felt monumental after years of secrecy. As they walked in together, it didn't take long for the room to quiet down. Colleagues, many of whom had spent years trying to crack the code of their friendship, looked between the two, sensing something was different but not yet understanding what.
Grey, their sergeant, was the first to speak. "Alright, Chen, Bradford, what's going on? Did you both win the lottery or something?"
Lucy exchanged a look with Tim, and for the first time, they didn't hide the smile that passed between them.
"Well," Tim started, his usual gruffness softened by something unfamiliar-joy. "I don't know about winning the lottery. But we do have news."
Lucy took a deep breath. "We've been married. For a while, actually."
The bullpen erupted in a mix of stunned silence and murmurs of disbelief. Jackson, Lucy's closest friend on the team, looked like he'd just been hit by a stun grenade. Angela, the sharp detective and Tim's former partner, was the first to break the silence.
"You two have been... married? And you didn't tell any of us?" She crossed her arms, but a grin was tugging at the corners of her mouth.
Lucy nodded, laughing nervously. "It was just easier to keep it private, I guess. But it didn't change anything about how we work. It's always been about trust, and we have that. On and off the job."
Grey cleared his throat, trying to hide a smile. "Well, married or not, you're still two of the best on this team. But next time you get hitched in Vegas, maybe think about inviting us."
The bullpen erupted in laughter, and Lucy felt the weight of all those years of secrecy fall away. Tim's hand found hers, squeezing it gently in a brief moment of relief. Their colleagues might have been surprised, but they were accepted, and the tension they'd carried for years evaporated with a single, simple revelation.
The rest of the day passed in a blur, punctuated by curious questions and half-serious teases from colleagues who wanted to know all the juicy details. By the end of their shift, Tim and Lucy found themselves alone in the squad car, the city lights reflecting off the windshield.
"Well," Tim said, glancing over at Lucy. "Guess we're officially partners now, huh?"
Lucy laughed, leaning back against the seat, her gaze softening as she looked at him. "I think we always were."
With a gentle smile, Tim took her hand in his, knowing that from now on, they didn't have to hide. Together, they drove off into the night, ready to face whatever came next, no longer as a hidden secret but as a team-stronger and more open than ever.
