"She must be compensating for something."I gasped, shoving Sam in the ribs as he and Peter stared up at the giant building in awe. Shrek references were the last thing I wanted to hear. I was almost as nervous as I had been at the interview, but this time there was a pressure to live up to Maximoff's (low) expectations.
"Thousands of people must work here."
"No wonder Maximoff doesn't give a shit about us," I scoffed.
"Speak for yourself."
It was too early to see Flash's face, and yet here he was; that stupid grin plastered on his temptingly punchable face.
"I'm happy you got the internship, y/l/n"
I rolled my eyes, grabbing Peter's arm as I pushed him through the glass doors into the crowded lobby. It was almost impossible to make our way over to the elevator with the swarm of employees, but the desperation to escape Flash drove me forward and into the elevator.
I let out a sigh as the doors began to close, but at the last second a hand shot out between them.
"I said," the boy straightened his suit as he strode into the elevator, grinning at the frown etched on my face. "I'm happy you got the internship."
I sighed, it was going to be a long day if I had to put up with Flash the whole time.
"And why is that?"
His smile grew impossibly wider and I knew I'd said the wrong thing. "Because I get to watch Maximoff fire you when she realises how useless you are."
Sam stepped forward, backing Flash into the doors with a loud thud. "Look mate, I don't know who the fuck you are, but I'm getting pretty tired of hearing you talk to my friend like that."
"Really y/n, you can't even talk to me yourself, can y—"
Sam didn't even let him finish his sentence before grabbing his blazer and pushing him against the shining metal.
Peter rushed to put a hand on his shoulder, doing his best to de-escalate the situation before we reached the top floor.
"Wave for the cameras," Flash croaked out, barely able to nod at the back corner of the ceiling that did in fact house a surveillance system. "Are you really that desperate to lose your job on the first day?"
The blond's hard stare was unwavering as his clenched fists loosened enough for Flash to brush him off.
Sam stepped back just in time for the doors to open. The other boy shot him a wink before turning and sauntering onto the giant office floor. I grabbed Sam's wrist before he could send him off with a middle finger, the last thing I wanted was to get him into trouble over protecting me. I knew I'd never forgive myself if I let that happen.
"You didn't have to do that."
"I wanted to."
"Maybe check for cameras next time," Peter offered with a shy smile. Sam laughed and pushed him forward gently, shaking his head as we followed the brunette out of the elevator.
Despite the rocky start to the day, my chest still swelled with excitement at the thought of working at Maximoff & Associates. My dream was unfolding right before my eyes.
"You must be the new interns." A brunette woman with sparkling blue eyes stepped out in front of us. She could only have been a year or two older than us, yet she had a maturity that seemed to emanate a force of professionalism—a maturity that vanished almost instantly. "God, don't look so scared. Maximoff isn't here yet!"
The three of us let out a small chuckle as she guided us away from the bustling centre of the office.
"Where are we going?" Peter asked.
"Unfortunately, I was recently promoted from interning, which means I've earned the coveted job of showing the new interns around."
"Sounds like you're really excited about that." I smiled at the woman's exaggerated eye roll.
"Ecstatic."
We stopped in front of a small group of people, all dressed smartly in suits or expensive dresses, with a priceless look of curiosity on their faces. Trust fund babies. My favourite.
"Since everyone's here, I think it's time to start the tour. I'm Kate Bishop, and fortunately for you I'll be in charge of you guys for the next couple of months. If you have any questions feel free to bring them to me and I'll do my best to answer them."
Someone raised a hand and Kate gestured for them to speak. "When are we going to get to work on our first court case?"
"When Maximoff assigns you to one, which I haven't heard of her doing before with a first-year-intern."
A collective sigh was heard amongst the crowd, shoulders sagging like hopes had just been crushed. Of course it was disappointing, but I hadn't expected the devil herself would give me such a massive responsibility in the first place.
"When will we find out if we've been given a permanent position here at the law firm?"
And just like that, the group of privileged, ambitious interns had trapped us in an inescapable prison of questions. My eyes glazed over as I glanced around the office, looking for something interesting to focus on.
After a couple more questions, I was sure we were never going to end up getting around to the tour.
I was seconds away from ending it all when I saw her. The glass window offered a clear view of Wanda pacing the length of her office, her fiery hair flowing behind her with every step. Her eyebrows were furrowed and her lips pursed as she spoke animatedly at the person on the other end of the phone. Suddenly she stopped, taking a deep breath to calm herself down as she turned towards me, catching my eye by accident. I wanted to look away but I couldn't; her deep green eyes held my gaze, and I didn't dare to break it. Her frown disappeared in seconds, replaced by a smile that was only intensified when I mouthed the words "help me."
I'm not sure what pushed me to do it, but I was glad I did when I saw her shake her head and laugh. I returned a grin, shook my own head slightly, and looked away.
The others could ask a million questions if it meant I could have another moment like that.
