'Samantha, get in here now!' My boss shouting from his office.

My hands trembled as soon as I heard his angry voice. Ever since my boyfriend broke up with me I was making all sorts of mistakes at work. And now I feared I was going to lose my job. My world was crumbling around me and there was nothing I could do to stop it.

I took a deep breath to try and steady my nerves and plastered a fake smile onto my face, ready to face what was coming my way.

'Yes, Mr Everly.' I asked sweetly as I stood in his doorway.

'In, now.' He barks.

I looked around to the empty office, hoping someone was still here, working late. I wanted someone else within screaming distance incase he hit me, because he honestly looked that angry. I'd never seen him like this before, not even when the company lost their biggest client a couple of months ago.

'Is there something wrong?' I ask.

'Take a look at these numbers and you tell me!' He snapped.

I walked around to his side of the desk and looked over his shoulders at the piece of paper he'd just thrown on his desk.

'Oh.' Was all I could say when I realised my mistake.

'Oh? Oh? Is that all you have to say?! Do you know much fucking money you just cost me?' He shouts, standing from his chair as he towers over me.

I cowered from him, feeling a tear slide down my face.

'I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. It was a mistake.' I garble out between sobs.

'Well your mistake...' He says air quoting the word. '...has just cost me thousands, maybe even millions.'

My eyes widen in shock. I didn't realise I'd done so much damage just by inputting the wrong figures into the end of year financial records.
I was definitely losing my job after this. There was no way I could recover from this. I'd fucked up and all because I couldn't stop thinking about my ex.

'What was going through your head when you were filling these out? Were you even paying attention? Because I have noticed you being distracted recently. Little hiccups I can forgive. But this... this is a whole new fucking level, Samantha.'

'I'm sorry.'

'Not good enough. Tell me what was going through your head!'

'I... i...'

'Just spit it out!'

'Kyle broke up with me.' I blurted out.

The love of my life. The person who I thought was going to be the father of my children.

'You were distracted because your boyfriend broke up with you?'

I lowered my head to the floor feeling utterly pathetic. Things just seemed to be going from bad to worse for me. But for some reason Mr Everly seemed to notice and took pity of me.

'I'm... I'm sorry, Samantha.' He surprises me.

My eyes flick up to meet his. His hand is stretch out to me and as he cups my cheek I can't help but nuzzle into him.

'Are you going to fire me?' I whimper, knowing how I must of looked.

He hesitates for a moment as if he was thinking of something before he nexts speaks.

'You've cost me a lot of money.'

'I know.' I whisper in reply.

'It would be unfair for me to keep you on when I would fire anyone else on the spot.'
