The shrill whistle pierced the air, signaling the start of their P.E. class. Katana, still buzzing from the unexpected intellectual sparring in Mr. Hawthorne's class, found herself jogging alongside Lilo towards the soccer field. The afternoon sun beat down on their backs, a stark contrast to the cool air of the library.
"I can't believe we have to run laps," Lilo groaned, her voice filled with mock despair. "It's like torture."
Katana chuckled, but her mind was elsewhere, replaying Aldrich's insightful thoughts on Hamlet’s soliloquy. He was not just the cold and distant SSG President; he had a depth that intrigued her.
As they started their laps, the heat intensified, and Katana began to feel lightheaded. Sweat dripped down her brow, and her legs started to feel heavy. She pushed through, determined not to fall behind, but the world around her began to blur.
"Katana, are you okay?" Lilo's voice cut through her haze, but it felt distant.
Before she could respond, a wave of dizziness hit her, and she stumbled. The ground rushed up to meet her, and everything went black.
When Katana regained consciousness, she found herself lying on a cot in the school clinic. The sterile smell of antiseptic filled her nostrils, and she blinked against the bright light overhead. Confusion clouded her thoughts, and she tried to sit up, her body feeling heavy and weak.
“Katana, you’re awake!” Lilo exclaimed, rushing to her side. Relief washed over her face.
“What happened?” Katana croaked, her voice barely above a whisper.
“You fainted during P.E.,” Lilo explained, her brow furrowed with concern. “You collapsed on the field. It was really scary!”
Katana winced at the memory. She had never fainted before, and the embarrassment washed over her. “I’m so sorry,” she said, her voice raspy. “I didn’t mean to—”
“It’s okay,” Lilo interrupted gently. “You probably got dehydrated. The nurse said you just need to rest for a bit.”
As Katana sat up slowly, she noticed a flurry of activity outside the clinic. Students were gathering near the soccer field, some pointing and murmuring. Her heart sank as she realized the commotion was because of her.
"Who carried me here?" Katana asked, her voice weak but curious.
“He carried you here,” Lilo said, her eyes wide. “He was really worried. But he had to leave for a meeting with the other SSG members right after.”
Katana felt a rush of warmth at the thought of Aldrich carrying her, his strong arms supporting her as she slipped into unconsciousness. She imagined him rushing through the hallways, his expression serious, focused on getting her the help she needed.
The nurse entered the room, checking her vitals and offering her a glass of water. “You’re going to be fine,” the nurse said with a reassuring smile. “Just take it easy for the rest of the day.”
Katana nodded, her thoughts still swirling around the earlier events. As she reached for the glass of water, she noticed a steaming cup of coffee on the table beside her, a small note tucked beneath the lid.
Her heart skipped a beat. She recognized the handwriting instantly—Aldrich's. She carefully lifted the note, her fingers trembling slightly.
“Hope you feel better. Don’t forget to stay hydrated. - A”
A warmth spread through her chest. He had taken the time to bring her coffee, even though he had a meeting to attend. It was a small gesture, but it meant a lot to her. She smiled softly, feeling a spark of hope and warmth inside her. Perhaps this was just the beginning of something special, something that would change their lives forever.
