At last, they’d made it to the RHU East Headquarters. It wasn’t what Teddy had expected, being much quainter than she’d imagined. Instead of some towering building, it consisted of a measly two floors. Subtly tucked between two antique shops on the streets of Downtown Caster. Teddy tapped Tevin, who was distantly staring at the building, on the shoulder from behind, “feeling nostalgic?”
A small grin tugged at the flamboyant man’s face, “I do suppose… Yes.” He turned to Teddy, his peripheral catching one final glance at the building. His grin distorted into an outright smirk, like he was holding laughter back. “Your face says it all, you’re probably thinking it’s nothing like the West Headquarters, aren’t you?”
Teddy returned his statement with a laugh, “yeah, actually.” She had seen the West Headquarters before; it could give Cassidy’s building a run for its money in terms of gaudiness. Always standing proudly in the middle of the district, Higher Caster. The glass windows being substitute for walls on all sides. The thing reflected everything in its radius from miles away. Teddy was surprised it was never flagged as a hazard to drivers. Or maybe it was, and they just never cared to fix it.
“But it is homebase,” Tevin said, “at least it was at some point.” He leaned into his hip, tapping his foot in rhythmic nature. “Let’s hope it’s still Barry’s, too. Or we just barked up the entirely wrong tree.”
“I think I saw his dusty old sports car come this way,” countered Teddy, “I wanna say we’re good.”
“Excellent!” Tevin clapped his hands in excited nature. His face went back to that determined expression of his. Something Teddy was far too used to seeing, thanks to it often being misplaced. “If his office is in the same place, then this should be a cinch!”
“Being where, might I add? We still need a plan, my dude.” Teddy intruded.
Tevin’s expression soured. He stretched out his arms and adjusted his bowtie. “Yes, I was getting there. Barry’s office is on the second floor, if memory serves, it should be the second one on the left. However,” Tevin’s hand rose to his head. Fingers dragging through his hair in what Teddy assumed was contemplation. “If you don’t mind taking care of that, I do have something I wish to investigate.’
“Oh?” Teddy leaned closer to Tevin, their shoulders practically touching. “What’s that?” She anticipated him inching back in typical Tevin nature. Admonishing her for invading his personal space, then proceeding to keep the secret. But surprisingly enough…
“Why, I’m taking a peek at my deceased brother’s office.” Teddy was shocked, not only did Tevin refrain from stepping away in repulsed nature. He indulged Teddy on his secret. Still, his words left Teddy’s stomach to knot with uncertainty. It was the flagrant disregard for his dead brother that really caught her off guard. The casual hand wave, a nonchalant expression towards a dead relative. What on earth was Tevin thinking?
She didn’t mean it, but Teddy ended up sounding disgusted. “Erm, okay.”
“Don’t look at me like that! I hardly knew the man!”
She quickly felt guilty for her poor reaction. “Right, right, sorry.”
A thick silence hung in the air during the following seconds. Teddy and Tevin merely blinked at each other, unsure of what to say. “Well,” it was Tevin who broke the silence. “Perhaps we shall get going?”
Teddy was grateful for him to do so. Because it sure wasn’t going to be her. “Yes,” she nodded in thankful agreement, “we shall.”
The two separated to go down different paths, yet again. Teddy worried it was starting to create some kind of bad omen. Tevin, however, didn’t give Teddy time to object. He whisked himself away down the hall of the first floor in seconds.
