Autumn had fully settled in, painting Silverwood High with vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. For Liam, though, there was a different warmth in the air—a spark that had begun to grow between him and Max. Their unspoken connection after the fall festival had left Liam feeling like everything around him was shifting.

During lunch, their group gathered at the outdoor courtyard, chatting about an upcoming Halloween party.

“So, are we actually doing this Halloween party, or is it just talk?” Sophie asked, leaning back on the bench, her gray eyes flashing with excitement.

Emily grinned, her enthusiasm as bright as her auburn hair. “We’re doing it. Costumes, decorations, the works. And I’m not taking no for an answer from any of you!”

Jamie chuckled, raising his hand in mock surrender. “Count me in. I may be terrible at costumes, but I can help with decorations.”

Sophie leaned forward, giving Liam a teasing look. “What about you, Liam? Got any costume ideas?”

Liam glanced at Max, who raised an eyebrow, clearly picking up on the question. “Maybe… a vampire?” Liam suggested, hoping it wasn’t too cliché.

Max smirked, a gleam in his eye. “Perfect. I’ll go as one, too. We’ll make it a theme.” He gave Liam a wink, causing a light flutter in Liam’s chest.

As their friends laughed and threw out costume suggestions, the spark between Liam and Max seemed to deepen. The two exchanged glances, and Liam could tell that this party might be the perfect chance to explore whatever was growing between them.

On Friday after school, Max invited Liam over to work on their costumes. Liam hadn’t expected it, but he was more than happy to spend the afternoon with Max. Max’s house was warm and welcoming, filled with family photos, trophies from his soccer games, and a coziness that made Liam feel at home.

“Alright, vampire buddy,” Max said, tossing Liam a fake set of fangs. “Let’s see if you can rock these.”

Liam chuckled, slipping them in and giving his best vampire snarl. “Pretty convincing, right?”

Max laughed, picking up a black cape from his bed. “You could definitely pass for one. Now let’s see if you can apply my face paint as well as I did yours.”

They sat on the floor, and Liam carefully applied dark lines around Max’s eyes, adding shadow and depth. Being so close to Max, the intimacy of the moment wasn’t lost on him. As he finished, he glanced into Max’s eyes, finding a warmth there that took his breath away.

“Thanks,” Max murmured, his voice a little softer than usual. “I feel like you just made me ten times more convincing.”

Their shared gaze lingered, the quiet feeling between them saying more than words ever could.

That night, the Halloween party transformed the Silverwood gym into a haunted haven, filled with eerie lights, fog, and Halloween decorations. Costumed students packed the room, laughing, dancing, and enjoying the spooky atmosphere.

Liam and Max entered together, their matching vampire costumes drawing admiring looks from their friends.

Emily ran over, dressed as a colorful witch, her eyes bright. “You two look amazing! Vampire duo of the year, for sure.”

Ryan, strumming a few eerie chords on his guitar, grinned. “Liam, Max—you guys nailed it. Got any vampire dance moves up your sleeve?”

Liam laughed, nudging Max. “Guess we’ll have to find out.”

The party continued with games, snacks, and dancing, the energy high and carefree. Liam felt like he was floating, every glance from Max adding to the thrill of the night. The slow songs, the laughter—it all felt like the start of something incredible.

As the night drew to a close, Max caught Liam’s eye. “Want to head outside for some air?”

Liam nodded, and they slipped out onto the courtyard, where the quiet of the evening wrapped around them. They stood side by side, the crisp air biting but refreshing.

“Tonight was great,” Liam murmured, glancing at Max. “Thanks for… well, everything.”

Max smiled, his gaze gentle. “It was. I’m glad we got to do this.”

For a moment, silence settled between them, comfortable and charged. Max took a small step closer, reaching out as if to take Liam’s hand but hesitating. Liam, feeling a surge of courage, reached back, their fingers intertwining.

The warmth between them felt real and undeniable, a promise of something more.

“Ready to head back?” Max asked softly.

“Yeah,” Liam replied, smiling. “Let’s go.”

They returned to the party, their friends waiting, and Liam knew that whatever this was with Max, it was only just beginning. And, with his friends by his side, he couldn’t wait to see where it would lead.
