The following Saturday, the group had planned a picnic at Silverwood Park, a sprawling green space just a few blocks from school. The trees were turning vibrant shades of orange and red, and the lake shimmered in the crisp autumn light. Emily, ever the organizer, had packed a basket full of snacks, while Ryan brought his guitar, promising an impromptu jam session.

Liam arrived first, clutching his sketchbook and a thermos of tea. He found a spot under a tree, setting up a few blankets as he admired the view. Silverwood Park was one of his favorite places to sketch, with its mix of open fields, woodland trails, and a tranquil lake that mirrored the sky.

“Yo, Liam!” Ryan called as he jogged over, his sandy blonde hair tousled from the breeze. He set his guitar down and flopped onto the blanket. “Perfect day for a picnic, huh?”

“Yeah, couldn’t ask for better,” Liam replied, watching as Ryan pulled out a handful of guitar picks from his pocket, scattering them across the blanket.

Within minutes, the others started to arrive. Emily showed up with her auburn hair pulled back in a cheerful ponytail, lugging the picnic basket. She greeted them with her usual bright smile, handing out snacks as she arranged everything meticulously on the blanket. Sophie followed behind her, wearing a leather jacket and a pair of vintage sunglasses that gave her a cool, almost mysterious look. She plopped down beside Ryan, teasing him about the mismatched guitar picks scattered around.

Then, as if on cue, Max strolled up with an easy confidence, wearing a fitted hoodie and jeans. He waved to the group and flashed a grin at Liam as he took the seat next to him. Liam’s heart did a tiny flip; even surrounded by his friends, Max had this way of making him feel like they were the only two people there.

“Alright, crew,” Emily began, holding up a bag of chips like it was a gavel. “Today’s agenda: relaxation, food, music, and absolutely no school talk!”

“Agreed,” Sophie said, reaching for a soda. “I could use a break from all the teachers breathing down our necks.”

Max nodded, grabbing a handful of chips. “Especially Mr. Turner in History. He gave us an essay due in two days. Over the weekend, too. I swear he’s out to get us.”

Liam chuckled, glad to be surrounded by the easy banter of his friends. It was rare for all of them to have a free afternoon like this, and he could feel the familiar comfort of their presence.

As they ate and chatted, a familiar face appeared at the edge of their picnic setup. It was Derek, a junior and one of Max’s soccer teammates. Tall and lanky with sandy hair and a wide smile, Derek had a loud, boisterous personality that often dominated conversations.

“Hey, Max! Thought I’d find you here.” Derek dropped down beside Max, giving him a quick slap on the back. “Didn’t know you were out with the artsy crew.”

Max tensed slightly, glancing at his friends. “Yeah, we’re just hanging out. These guys are great.”

Emily raised an eyebrow but kept her tone light. “Nice to see you, Derek. Help yourself to some food.”

“Don’t mind if I do!” Derek said, grabbing a sandwich. His gaze drifted over to Liam’s sketchbook, which was open to a sketch of the lake, trees reflected in the still water. “Whoa, did you draw that? Looks pretty cool for… you know, a high school kid.”
