Returning to Silverwood High after the weekend at Silver Lake felt surreal for Liam. Memories of the lakeside, laughter with friends, and, most of all, the tender kiss he shared with Max stayed fresh in his mind. Walking into school that Monday, Liam felt a renewed sense of excitement mixed with nervousness. What would it be like seeing Max in the halls, in classes, with everyone else around?

As he headed to his locker, he noticed Max leaning against the wall, waiting. Max’s usual confident smile softened when he saw Liam, a warmth in his gaze that made Liam’s heart skip a beat.

“Hey, how’d you sleep?” Max asked casually, though there was a subtle hint of something more in his voice.

“Pretty well,” Liam replied, unable to hide his smile. “You?”

“Not as great as at Silver Lake,” Max said, giving him a teasing look. Liam’s cheeks reddened, and he had to bite back a laugh.

Just then, Emily and Sophie appeared, both of them instantly locking eyes with Liam and Max.

“Oh, we’re just going to ignore the obvious tension here, are we?” Sophie teased, crossing her arms with a smirk. Emily giggled, clearly loving every moment of their discomfort.

Liam’s face turned a shade deeper, and he glanced at Max, who just chuckled and gave a shrug as if to say, Let them talk.

Ryan soon joined them, playfully oblivious to the energy in the group. “Alright, so what’s the plan for lunch today? And don’t say the cafeteria, because I’m done with mystery meat Mondays.”

“Pizza at Romano’s?” Jamie suggested, popping in with his usual enthusiasm.

The friends agreed, and as they headed to class, Liam couldn’t shake the feeling that everything was falling into place in ways he’d only dreamed of.

Lunch was lively as always, with everyone crammed into a booth at Romano’s Pizzeria. Sophie and Emily took turns grilling Liam and Max about their weekend, each question making Liam feel both embarrassed and thrilled.

“So, Liam, tell us,” Emily asked with a grin. “Any favorite parts of the trip?”

Liam stammered, glancing quickly at Max, who gave him a small, supportive smile. “Um… the lake was nice. And the, uh… campfire.”

Max chuckled, reaching for another slice of pizza. “Yeah, the lake was great. Not to mention those spooky stories that were totally terrifying,” he added with a wink, making the whole table laugh.

As they all laughed and talked, a familiar face walked in: Derek, who had been their guide during the festival and someone who had recently been hanging around more with their group. He spotted them and made his way over.

“Hey, guys!” Derek greeted, his friendly smile lighting up his face. “Mind if I join?”

“Of course not!” Emily said, moving over to make room.

Derek sat down, immediately blending in with their chatter. He was charming and easygoing, his jokes making everyone laugh. Despite this, Liam couldn’t shake a small feeling of awkwardness; Derek was an old friend of Max’s, and Liam had a sense he’d been around during Max’s earlier relationships. A small, irrational insecurity crept in, but Liam shook it off. He trusted Max, and he didn’t want anything to ruin their good day.

After school, Max found Liam near the art room, where Liam often went to draw after classes. “Want some company?” Max asked, a hopeful look in his eyes.

“Sure,” Liam replied, surprised but pleased.

Inside, Liam picked up his sketchbook, while Max settled on a nearby stool, watching as Liam worked. They fell into a comfortable silence, with only the soft scratch of pencil against paper filling the room.

“What are you working on?” Max asked after a while, leaning over to peek at the page. Liam’s cheeks warmed as he realized he’d been sketching a scene from the weekend: the view of Silver Lake, with a subtle detail of two figures sitting side by side.

“It’s… uh, nothing special,” Liam mumbled, trying to hide his drawing.

Max chuckled, gently taking the sketchbook and studying it with an appreciative smile. “It’s beautiful. You’re really talented, Liam.”

Liam looked down, feeling shy. “Thanks… I’m still figuring it out, though.”

“Well,” Max replied, “I think you’ve got a gift. And I’d love to see more of it, if you’re okay with that.”

They shared a quiet, lingering moment before the final bell signaled the end of the school day. Reluctantly, they packed up, heading back to the hallway.

“Thanks for today,” Liam said, his voice soft. “And… for everything this weekend.”

Max smiled, slipping a hand onto Liam’s shoulder. “Anytime. I… really like spending time with you, Liam.”

With that, they went their separate ways, but as Liam walked home, he felt like he was floating. He knew things wouldn’t always be this simple—relationships rarely were—but in that moment, he felt like the luckiest person in the world.
