Eddie's perspective
I hate mondays.
Another one of the thoughts that spring back into my mind with each passing week.
Tucked into my bedsheets accompanied by only myself and my Walkman, I found myself rotting in my room, yet again.
I knew well enough that this week would be a complete mimic of every other that had passed since the summer of 1989, sitting in my bedroom and fantasising about what I could've done. What I could've had. What we could've had. But I promised myself that things would change.Things would get better from here. I hoped, anyway.
How would things get better? Not sure.
I grabbed my sheets, tossing them off of my bed and rolling out as I hit the ground with a thud. I sat up and trudged across the room, until I reached my mirror and examined my face carefully. I wasn't insecure. Actually, I was quite the opposite. I admired my features with a smile, checking my teeth cautiously.
It was only 8am and I was out of my bed. That was a start, I suppose.
I had decided to arrange something today, knowing that if I made plans with somebody I wouldn't be able to back out- Even if I wanted to. I like to present myself as the type of person you can rely on, which was easy enough for me.
After getting ready, I stumbled down the stairs until I reached the house phone, dialling the number I was more than familiar with at this stage.
"Eddie?" I sighed in relief when I heard Bill's tired voice from the other line.
"Hey!" I responded cheerfully, attempting a bright greeting. I knew Bill wasn't a morning person, but all I could do was try my best.
"It's early... What's the issue?"
I smiled to myself, recalling Bill's perfect speech. It had come so far since we met.
"I know it's early, but I was wondering if you wanted to meet up today? With Stan, too. It's really okay if you can't- I'm just suggesting. Y'know, to get out of the house."
I heard the line go silent for a moment, before Bill spoke again.
"Sure! If Stan is going then it should be fine."
Failing to suppress a grin, I replied quickly
"If Stan's going?" It was hard not to tease him, after all, he was so easily embarrassed when I brought up his flawless love life.
"Shut up, Eddie." Bill scolded, but I could hear just how flustered he was in his voice.
"Okay, okay. You can ask Stan. I'll walk over to yours and meet you two there."
Agreeing on the arrangements and Ending the call quickly, I grabbed my coat and my fanny pack, making my way over to Bill's.
*
It was early enough when I got there. I knocked on the door and took a step back, waiting for an answer.
"Eddie!" Stan greeted with a smile, bringing me in for a hug.
I retaliated the hug, not even starting to question why Stan was already here, even though his house was much further away.
Bill appeared in the doorway, exchanging awkward eye contact followed by an unnecessary fit of giggles.
"I've missed you guys." I sighed contently, following the other two to the edge of Bill's driveway.
"It's barely been a month, idiot." Stan scoffed as we began to walk down towards the town.
