Black (Pearl Jam)-
Yeah, I know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky,
But why? Why?
Why can't it be...
Why can't it be mine?

September 4th 1971
"Do you think the teacher will be mad?" I ask, worry in my voice as James shrugs his shoulders.
Our footsteps echoed in the empty halls. The hoards of students had dispersed a few minutes ago, including the rest of our friends leaving me and James to ourselves as we walked briskly to class.
"Nah," James brushed off, "I heard Madame Hooch isn't one for punishment."
I'd heard the same thing. Bella told us that she was a stern woman, much like McGonagall but she wouldn't actually punish you when it came down to it.
"So you said your dream was at Christmas time?" I could tell by his voice that he was nervous about asking the question. I'd noticed that with James, when he was nervous or lying his voice went up about 7 octaves, Peter did the same thing.
I nod, my lips tightening as I brush my blonde hair over my shoulder, "Yeah, I was with my mum."
He hummed, "so it was a good dream?"
Looking up at him I was sure my eyes had widened. Good? how could Christmas with my Mother be good? "I guess, I got a book," I say simply. Reminding myself that he wouldn't understand.
"Yikes," he grimaced, "can't be that good."
I giggle as we walk which makes James grin, the gap-toothed smile is infectious, so much so that even Pandora who I just bumped into smiled.
"Kate!" She greeted me with excitement, "and you," she acknowledged, smiling warmly at James who waved back.
"Hey Panda," I gave her the nickname a few years ago when we dressed up for Halloween and snuck into a muggle village, it was only us and Sirius, the others wouldn't go near the muggles. She went as a raccoon not a panda but the smudged gray around her eyes contrasting her bright blonde hair reminded me of a panda, not a raccoon. Plus it fit her real name, "This is James."
She smiled at him, fluttering her eyelashes. She never did that on purpose, she couldn't help it but it confused an awful lot of boys at the parties we went to. "I was sent to look for you," she told me, "Dumbledore wants to see you."
My entire body froze up, a shiver running down my spine as James frowned.
"Merlin, you in trouble already?" James asked sarcastically, "And here I thought you were a goody-two-shoes."
He didn't seem to notice I wasn't listening, nor did he care as I reached into my pocket. My mother put an extension charm on it before I left so rifling through my belongings to find the crumpled letter was no easy task. My quivering fingers finally found the yellowing parchment that I had angrily stuffed into my pocket a few days earlier. I turned to my two confused friends with an apologetic letter and my lips parted in disbelief.
"Give this to Sirius," I told James shoving the letter into his hands as I steadied my breathing, trying not to focus on my sinking stomach. "he can explain what it is to you after, bloody hell he can give it to you for all I care but make sure he reads it."
Although he looked confused the boy nodded without hesitation, his grin long gone as he turned towards the classroom, beginning to run off.
"James!" I call out, abruptly stopping him and turning him around. Stepping forward, I wrap an arm around his neck, pulling him into a hug as I try to remember as many of his features as I can. This is happening too fast; I should get to say proper goodbyes.
